And to me it is a major distraction. I expect serious performers to dress like serious people -- that is, appropriately for the occasion and venue. If that is not what you do, I am not coming.
I am reminded of debates in churches some time past, that they had to provide young people with "their" music to get them interested in coming to church. Well, we did, and for the most part, they didn't. Now we're struck with this dreadful music and no tangible result.
If you think is hard to change forward, try changing back! My preference would be to try to keep the "classical" music culture intact, and let them take it or leave it.
I was sidestepping that issue with my comments. However, like it or not, clothing fashions do evolve. Men's white tie and tailcoat evening wear dates back to the 1850s, so you have to expect change eventually. Soloists have been moving away from it at least since the early 1970s (even earlier in Europe, I'm told). You aren't going to bring them back at this point.
