He was a hoot when he stepped up for his solo(s) in Gil Evans Orchestra Monday nites at Sweet Basil back in the 80's, always burned like a bon fire.
My fav. spot back then.
RIP
Lew Soloff was one of my early trumpet role models. His solo on "Spinning Wheel" was transcribed for me by my trumpet instructor, and I still have it.
In September of 2006, Lew performed at the Maynard Ferguson Tribute concert, playing "My Funny Valentine". Wonderful playing! And yes, he changed MPs, but I don't care - he knew what he was doing, and he's a better player than I'll ever be.
....the great Viking trumpeter. He will be missed.

Too sad... He is all over my audio collection. RIP.
That is sad news for sure.

Yeah shocking news, I was very sad to hear it. I've never met a "younger" 70 year-old.

Just heard this morning, pretty shocking alright. I hadn't seen him in several years, but knew Lew for around 40 years. He played the shit outta the lead book in one of my big bands in the mid-late '70's. Crazy SOB would sometimes bring 15-20 mouthpieces, switch 'em in mid-chart and might end up playing 5 m'pieces during one chart - especially if he also had a solo.Played with him quite a bit over the years in a number of other bands. Amazing player, both as a lead player and soloist (his small group with Lou Marini and Joe Beck was excellent). There'll be a helluva lot of Soloff stories told around town. As you probably know, Lew was a unique character as well as a unique player :-)
