GREAT recordings.Listening to all three Shostakovich Quartet recordings as all thre are available for streaming on MOG.
And better yet, all three CDs are listed on Amazon at about $10+ each.
A must buy for me as their playing is more to my liking than even the Borodin on Chandos which I have and up to now was at or near the top of my list.

But not by a wide margin vs. Pacific, et al.. The Fitzwilliam sound quality is very good for RBCD; it has good perspective, etc.

I love the music of ...... Franz Joseph Haydn

I still prefer the performances of the last Borodin cycle on Melodiya although Pacifica comes close.
The Borodin cycle SQ is amazing on vinyl, CDs are quite good too.
Must not touch key!

It's a long story, but I can't get into my library tonight, but the original 1st violinist's book on the quartet's story was a great read....but I refuse to butcher his name at present. I have the complete 1960s cycle on Russian vinyl....with the exception of SQ No. 8, which was released on a western label.
I've heard another four cycles on shiny discs. The original Borodin SQ was born for this music.
Tom B.
Rostislav Dubinski was the first violinist and the book (his memoirs) is "Stormy Applause" The book is outstanding, including the descriptions of being one of the groups of players who performed while Stalin laid in state, and descriptions of traveling in the west during the cold war. He ended up being a refusnik and was allowed to emigrate to the US
pictured above, which would explain why there are only 13 quartets in this set, as he defected in 1970.
For anyone interested, this box set is relatively cheap at about $16 plus media mail from Amazon Sellers.
