I'm sending the Katchen set back. Wondering what your take is on the Klien Vox set. So far, I'm enjoying most of it. Another contender according to Amazon is Oppitz (sp?). Are you familiar with either of these sets? And how about Perahia? I have his CD with the 3rd sonata along with other things that are in the Klien set. I think I will send it back too. I really don't much care for the 3rd piano sonata as performed by Klien and that is the biggie on the Perahia. I'm guessing it has more to do with early Brahms than the performance, but I could be wrong.

I actually don't have many recommendations (I'm sure other posters will have some good suggestions) but one disc I like a lot is the Radu Lupu recording of the late miniatures (Op 117-9 and the two awesome Rhapsodies), which I think is beautiful, understated playing.
Did you send back the Katchen based on your listening?
Katchen? I decided to send it back unopened based on your comment about banging. At least I'll get a refund on it. I don't want to spend a bunch of money on stuff I'm just exploring. Too much of what I'm hearing in some Brahms chamber music seems overwrought. Ditto in some Schumann.
That Lupu set you mentioned is one of my favorites due to his playing. I feel that Walter Klien is somewhat similar to Lupu. I have both versions now (117-119)to compare when I have some time.
Right now, I'm listening to the Brahms Violin Sonatas by deVito and Fischer. I prefer these to some other Brahms chamber works I've heard lately.
I know Katchen has his fans for Brahms playing, but I'm just not one of them.
