Altho, I can appreciate different styles in conducting. So far I am not too fond of Ormandy or Stokowski type of sound but then they can be very effective when partnered with the right soloist.
Typically Philadelphia Sound ( ormandy era ) gives me an impression of a huge wad of smeared pastel drawing.
Funny to see someone in the video also mentioned Muti taking the fat off the orchestra.

I'd say that's accurate. The common factor among all of Ormandy's best recordings is that the sound is leaner and more refined. He has a really beautiful recording of "Das Lied" that you'd never know it was him conducting. Same is true of his Sibelius and Shostakovich (and both composers were impressed with his conducting of their music, especially Shostakovich).
Rachmaninoff was also a big fan of the Philadelphia Orchestra back then. It was his favorite U.S. orchestra to work with. Ormandy's recordings of Rachmaninoff's symphonies remain among the best.

I've only heard the Piano Concertos ( Rachmaninoff himself and Horowiz )
I think Horowiz's PC No.3 is very good with Ormandy.
Which Ormandy's Rachmaninoff straight symphonies do you like?
.
I still think Ormandy's recording of Rachmaninoff's 1st is among the best ever. The tempi are right on, with good energy from the beginning, and he is one of the very few who got the swirling effect in the first and final movements right.

His Rach 2 was the best I've heard outside of Shipway/Cleveland. Just be sure to get the uncut version. (Although the cut version was maybe better played.)
