In Reply to: RE: Kitezh - and a new issue of the 1987 Soviet "Kaschei The Immortal" opera film posted by Chris from Lafayette on February 15, 2011 at 17:13:56
I'm planning a traversal of Russian opera sometime in the future. I've actually seen Kitezh live twice, The second performance, again by the Kirov at Lincoln Center, was a pale shadow of the first.
This is out of place on an LvB thread, but I heard Prokofiev's "Betrothal at a Monastery" at the Met over a decade ago. I went for social reasons, expecting the opera to be socialist realist snoozerola, and I was surprised to find it a wonderful opera. Amphissa probably has 5 recordings of it :)
Follow Ups:
Kaschei is pretty succinct - but I think I was wrong when I said it was under an hour - 70 minutes is probably more like it.
I have the Gergiev/Kirov DVD of "Betrothal in a Monastery" - it's one of the very best of the videos that Philips did with the Kirov in terms of audio and picture quality (although the newer Blu-Ray of the Mariinsky Firebird and Rite of Spring on the Bel-Air label is on another, higher level entirely). Another attraction of the Prokofiev DVD is La Trebs in the role of Louisa. I'm worried that she's lapsing into chubbiness nowadays. :-)
