Both Bach and Beethoven are contenders, but I think so is Mozart, although for different reasons.Strictly my opinion of course but:
Bach was the master of form - who else could write such masterfully created fugues, contrapunctuses (contrapuncti??), partitas, etc. with such mathematical precision AND musicality?
Beethoven speaks to my soul - he can wring out more of my emotion than any other composer. Who else could write entire symphonies based on a 4 note motif? combine forceful and gut wrenching dissonance, cosmic majesty, with achingly beautiful melodies and harmonies? I listened to the 9th Symphony last night and cried during the 3rd and 4th movements. No other composer brings that depth of emotion to me.
Mozart - such grace, with every note perfect, seemingly pouring out just as required. Sheer perfection.
