Thank you. I'm no champ at typing either, but after a little while the shift key becomes quite familiar.
"Full Moon and Empty Arms"! Yes! Those are the kind of things I detest the most. Nina Simone had a hit with "Don't You Know", a corruption of Quando men vo (sp?) from La Boheme. The aria is beautiful enough. It doesn't need to be dumbed down. If people don't want to listen to the original, let them eat cake.
And the little songs from first piano books. Those folks should be shot. My book didn't have "The Happy Little Frog". It had "Papa Haydn". Same theme, though. "Papa Haydn's dead and gone, but his memory lingers on". I remember it over half a century later. Argh! But I usually manage to forget when listening to the symphony.
Oh, and "Hello, Muddah" used the Dance of the Hours by Ponchielli (sp?), famous in "Fantasia". It's the dance between the hippos and crocodiles.
Good quote by Toscannini. I'll try to remember it. Which reminds me of a joke: How do you know when a singer is at the door? Can't find the key and doesn't know when to come in.
Follow Ups:
Unless you pronounce it 'mem'ry', which is an abomination, or add a note to the melody, which is sacrilege! This reminds me of a book, title forgotten, about a classical radio station. "Never say 'Papa Haydn', just Haydn, unless you are talking about Michael Haydn. And not 'Ludwig van Beethoven'. Who do you think wrote Beethoven's 9th Symphony, his nephew Fritz Beethoven?" (para-still haven't learned how to paragraph) Thanks for the heads-up on 'Hello Mudder', my mem'ry ain't what it used to be. I am thankful to be unaware of the Nina Simone, but wasn't there a Bach hit back in the 60's by somebody horrible, like the Swingle Singers?(para)And a final joke, not on topic. How can you tell when a drummer is at the door? The knocking keeps speeding up.
Yes, they used "mem'ry" to keep the melody line intact.
I actually have a Swingle Singers album. They don't bother me because they sing sounds rather than words. "Bah, bah, bah" doesn't keep running through my head when I hear the Toccata & Fugue in D minor. Plus, they're pretty good musicians.
If you are blessed, you will never hear the Nina Simone song. I don't even like her voice.
What do you call a guy who likes to hang out with musicians? A drummer. (paragraph) Here's the neo-classic: What do you call a guy who likes to hang out with non-musicians? A rock drummer.
Perhaps you've listened to "A Prairie Home Companion" joke show.
but I believe I invented the neo-classic.
