Hi All,I picked up two mint volumes of this (concerts and piano pieces) at a thrift and they appear to have the whole set.
The "quick and dirty" question: should I get the whole shebang? (the money is not the problem as they are $3 a box; space is more the issue.)It being all DG, are there specific volumes to recommend, or should I just schlep home the whole load, put it on and let the chips fall....
I am wondering, given its size, if this set falls victim to being "the best of Deutche Grammofon" as opposed to "The Best of Beethoven."
What are your recommendations?

If space is an issue, I'd pass on this set. There are some decent performances, but my recollection is that there's little that I'd call essential.
Any time I read about a Beethoven piece I know I have it and can go listen. I paid close to $100 for the whole set.
If I want to explore a piece in question further I can buy other recordings, things like the 5th symphony I have several copies of on disc and vinyl. But for other items the playing is competent, the sound has been quite acceptable, and I enjoy having it to listen to though I can't say I have ever even tried to sit down and start working my way through the set. If you already bought a couple you certainly have the ability to see if I am right!
It's a good set of decently-recorded good performances. I don't think many of them are ground-breaking or definitive so it depends what you want. If you want some good versions of some good music it's well worth it, if you're looking for the be all to end all to brag about it isn't.

I am of the opinion that the earlier "Beethoven Edition" series is better.
For one, they were actually pressed in Germany and not the USA.
these are readily available to him.
