In Reply to: RE: Strauss Orchestral Works (Kempe) EMI Classics vs. Brilliant Classics posted by Frihed89 on April 05, 2010 at 12:34:41
Out of direct, repeated experience I can say that the Brilliant reissues, while certainly worth the price, are not generally on the same sonics level of the "originals".
Comparing any of the CDs in the Brendel Brilliant reissue with, say any of the earlier Vanguard CD reissues (or the various CD reincarnations of the Vox LPs) bears (IMO) strong witness to this. Same applies for instance to the Martinon/Debussy or, even more, the Jochum/Bruckner cycle with, again, Dresden (I had owned the Brilliant for some time and then ordered the now-hard-to-find EMI import after just some sampling).
But, this is no surprise. It makes thorough sense that Brilliant, in pursuing a very low cost may be willing reach some compromise in terms of material and manufacturing processes.
It is just like low-cost flying. If timeliness, reduced baggage allowance or a tiny seat are not an issue, I am more than happy to fly the whole family for a pocketful of Euros. But if time, baggage allowance, meals on board and a decent seat to sleep overnight to land in reasonable shape for business are an issue, I am more than ready to fly first class.

Follow Ups:
I bought the Brilliant Martinu box and I had the 1 BIS recording and to me they sound equally good. Again same experience with the 5 cd's Brilliant Prokovief box, they sound identical.
. . . is to see some comparative samples on ProTools or something. :-)
BTW - I'm not necessarily doubting you (although you seem to be using other recordings than the Kempe set to draw a generalization). I have only heard the Kempe performances via EMI (LP and CD) myself.
I would be quite interested in seeing any comparative results in that line (presumably these are already available, but I am unaware of that).
Specifically, other than spectra (these may only relatively tell and differences in sound may be due to different source materials being used) I would be intrigued to see any comparative results (not specifically related to Brilliant, I mean general information) in terms of, say, pit-readout by the laser pickup, interventions of the RS error oorrector, and so on, on the -- same -- digital program input to the CD laser manufacturing process in the case of, say, different manufacturing plants. I assume manufacturers should have such data, but certainly not publicly available.
I know that may sound whimsical. On the other hand, CD manufacturing is not that remote a process from IC manufacturing processes: there, it is a well known fact that otherwise minor parameters may have a strong impact on the results (for instance in terms of yield).
