wondering if it's just English language where 'sax' and 'sex' sound the same in sense or if the sound of the sax itself brings out the sense of sensuality.
H.F.N.
Follow Ups:
For "sensual" think Ben Webster or Coleman Hawkins playing a slow ballad or blues.
In up-tempo mainstream jazz, the sax more often sounds "jaunty" or "sassy."
In a lot of bebop, maybe "jittery" or "nervous."
And then there is the squealy-squawky raucous music of the avant garde. In this sort of context, the instrument can communicate extreme and violent emotions. But nobody's gonna make out to Coltrane's Ascension, or the World Saxophone Quartet.
... and partly a Pavlovian response to decades of movie soundtracks and television commercials where a husky saxophone starts to play as soon as the hanky panky starts.
Clarinets can sound very naughty given half a chance.
Yes, for sure it's the sound. Trust me. Ask the women how they feel about the saxophone.
For the record, I'm a sax player.
