$500 interconnects? Have you gone completely crazy and turned into some sort of an audiophile while I wasn't looking? You used to be a lover of music! :)
Follow Ups:
Are you Mike M??
Yes I must be going mad but I will follow John Marks advise and get some cheap ones.
I got a new high end system that sounds magic thus I though well I went so far, let's do the last step, maybe I am missing something?
I looked in here a little while ago and noticed two things - the tone here seems to have become a lot more civil than when I was last here, and there seems to be a dearth of good jazz discussion. Well, three things now that I think of it - you've become a high end audiophile! So I started a new moniker.
I'm actually jealous of you - my hearing has deteriorated so badly over the past few years, I'm happy if I can hear all the frequencies, never mind the subtle influence of a cable. I've been doing a lot of my listening via ipod and headphones these days. If you would have told me 5 or 10 years ago that I'd mostly be listening to compressed music files, I'd have laughed. But along the way I've proven to myself that the music is much more important to me than the sound. Even so, I've always been kinda skeptical on cable influences. I've got a nephew-in-law, a real know it all type, and he was always telling me that his cables made a huge difference in sound. I put him to the test once, we did a blind comparison test on his system and on mine, switching out our interconnects - and he failed to identify a difference much more than half of the time (everyone makes a lucky guess sometimes). Admittedly, this experiment wasn't all that scientific, but I believe there have been many many more structured comparative tests that have yielded similar results. Given a choice between Charles Mingus on a decent CD player and amp with cheap cables or Brian Bromberg on a state-of-the-art high end system, even with (sorry) $500 interconnects :-) - I'll go with Mingus all the way. I know you feel the same way, I'm just joshin' with you a little. God bless your good hearing, and your pursuit of perfect sound.
Nice to hear from you. Luckily for me my hearing seems good.
As you said difference in cables can be argued but having spend a lot of money on a wonderful audio system I said to myself why not spend some money on cables. I needed new interconnects anyway as the previous one
where not balanced and the manufacturer of the cd and amp do recommend balanced.
I won't spend 500$ but maybe half of that. BTW I also discovered that 500$ seems moderate when reading high end magazines.
I did borrow some 500$ interconnect and the system seems to sound nicer, maybe it is the placebo effect taking place??
And yes music is still the priority, but these days I seem to buy more classical than jazz, maybe I am getting old? (Actually I am)
Nice to have you back!!
It's good to "see" you and converse with you, too. I looked in here mostly to see what's being posted about A/V systems. That's been the direction of my recent enthusiasm, since I got a 52" Hi-def TV and a blu-ray DVD. As for the $500... I'd be thinking of how many CDs I could buy with that money! Blu-ray DVDs now too!
