Beautiful African influenced Jazz & traditional music. I picked it up on a whim at Borders while purchasing Radiohead's In Rainbows. Slipped on the headphones and was simply possessed to buy the cd. Dee Dee's vocals are impeccable and there are truely no sleepers here. If you already have it, confirm my enthusiasm and if you don't have it...check it out!
Follow Ups:
I like Red Earth and think it works well as the Malian/jazz brew it is. Bridgewater has a tremendous voice. Mostly though, I prefer to listen to actual Malian singers such as Oumou Sangare and Rokia Traore. Check them out -if you like Red Earth you should love either of them. There are also a couple great compilation CDs (can't remember labels right now...) that feature female vocalists from Mali worth listening to. One slight drawback is that they don't sing in English, but it is of little consequence musically, as you get the point and the music is devine.
Then there are those fabulous Malian male singers/instrumentalists...
There are many great sounds emminating from that physically rather small/musically rather large country.
"...You're all welcome to stay for the next set...we're going to play all the same tunes, but in different keys..." -Count Basie
I'll look them up.
