Return to Planar Speaker Asylum
146.70.58.134
I wasn't sure whether to post this in Speaker, Vintage, or Planar, but here I am...
I have a refurbed pair of Infinity RS-4/B's. I just now put my system back together after a 5 year hiatus, and I never really got a chance to listen to the Infinitys before putting the system to the side. But now that I have it back up and running, I'm wondering which speaker placement is best for these speakers.
In general, should these speakers face straight forward, or toed-in? Should they be closer together with the listening position further back? Or chair closer with speakers further apart and toed-in facing the listening position? I assume that the dispersion pattern for these tweeters is more horizontal than vertical.
I know that the real answer lies in experimentation and my personal preference. But I have a lot of work to do with the room, component and speaker isolation, and the stuff being stored in said room. I would like to start with a positioning set-up that is considered "optimum" while I work on the room and make changes along the way.
Thanks in advance for any experience or advice you can share...

That helps. Also what E-Stat said about the rule of thirds. You may find it simply works, and you are nearly done re: location.
Pointing straight ahead with tweeters out is my preference. But that is with magnepans.

It's a tricky one. It's the bonus room over our 2-car garage, so a suspended floor. It is 17'W x 19'L with 10' ceiling. However, on the 17' walls, the ceiling begins at the top of a 5' knee wall and then slopes upward at a 45 deg angle. To add to the challenge, the 17' wall behind the speakers has 2 dormer/window openings that extend from floor to ceiling.
The door/hallway coming into the room is about 1/3 the distance from the opposite 17' wall. If I were to put the speakers along that wall, I would be walking into the left channel as I enter the room.
I was moving the speakers around last week and ended up, by luck, about 1/3 from the side walls. The fronts of the speakers are about 5' out from the rear wall. This eliminated some bass bloom, for sure.
The room is a bit of a mess. Once I get some things straightened out, I can post a couple of pictures. I do have some DIY treatments, i.e., moving blankets on the side walls. And some rock wool if I want to put together some bass traps. But after eliminating the bass bloom it sounds pretty darn good.
Gear: Cary Audio 303/300 cdp, Zero Zone tube preamp (12AX7 x 4, C-J knock-off?), B&K Reference 4420 amp, RS-4/B's. IC's are Audio Art Cable IC-3 rca, currently using a run of ethernet cable to each speaker.
The Limage method works well for me in a 12 x 17 room. Your room sounds much more challenging...

works for me as it did for the mentor who suggested it.
Begin by positioning speakers at thirds of room width and length. Minimizes room modes. Fine tune from there.
TY, E-Stat, for the reminder of the thirds rule. It's definitely been a while. See my response to farfetched above.
