Disclaimer I am a dealer.A few more details about the overall room size would be helpful. But with the information you have given 3' from the back is more than adequate. With their radiation pattern side wall placement is not that critical. In most situations I recommend spreading them far apart, mine are about 9' apart on center, even if that places them close to the side walls.
In a near field setup, 6-7' back from the speakers, QUADs were designed with this kind of setup in mind, your room shouldn't present any major problems.
The ESL-57 is a very special speaker I will always own a pair and listen to them frequently. But my preference has always been for the 63 design. QUAD has continued to refine the 63 design and the current generation, 2812X/2912X, are by far the best QUAD ever produced both in terms of sonics, build quality and reliability. Unlike most products being built in China IAG/QUAD has their own plant they are not built by some 3rd party company that builds for anyone.
The price difference between finding and restoring an older pair versus buying new is getting close. Freight costs, parts cost, etc. are rising every day. If one already olds an older pair of QUADs restoration makes sense. But if one doesn't already have a pair buying new is an attractive option both financially and logistically.

Thanks Kent, you have given me hope. Sounds like owning a British car, you need 2, a '57 and a '63 variant, vintage or new. Someone down the street in an office complex has a TR-6, and a TR-7. Personally, I'd have the TR-6 and a new F-Type.
Room is basically a bowling alley. It's 13' X 20', 14' to the off axis listening seat. Open for 10' on the left side, then a 10'wall. Depending on the furniture configuration they could be about 7' apart, edge to edge.
I've been considering speakers that would be more attuned to the limited placement, but if I want Quads, and wouldn't be wasting my money, then why not put them on the list? They'll sure be hard to beat based on what I remember from my time listening to the 988's.
Here's my setup. I've tried them in different parts of our home over the years since purchased new back in the eighties.
Well travelled like foot print paths in a Family Circus comic strip.
Ikea director's chair from same era far right in the pic my sweet spot.

That right side looks about where mine would be near the wall.
I've got to say, I'm getting near obsessed with the chairs in the photo E-Stat posted. Almost as much as with the French Girl I posted...
Those chairs in Estat's pic would work well for me too! I move my chair off to the side when not listening. So something stylish and lightweight is nice. Guess those in the ad were from the 50's or 60's .
