Oh, so exactly what I did to my 3.6R?

Yes, two weeks ago I went to The Listening Room in Chestertown, MD and listened to the 1.7i and 1.7X.
I can say that they sounded different, but I would not say for sure I liked one or the other better. I don't think there was a difference in bass response ... it was more in the midrange.
I also have to say I'm very skeptical that the mechanical and electrical differences between the two would necessarily result in a better sound ... such that it would outweigh differences in room acoustics or treatment.
I wish I could give a more conclusive comparison, but that would take a very focused listening session with my own benchmark recordings and some attention to identical placement, etc.
Same day - positioned right where the Magnepans were - I also listened to one of the Diptique models and they clearly sounded better. Albeit for several times the price.
