My current room is no issue for the 1.7s although I do sit close. The room is dedicated for me. The JansZens will work in there as well and actually take less real estate. I should be able to rework the room to give me a couple more feet of listening distance. David used some kind of absorbing material behind the listeners in his room. The wall behind the speakers can be untreated. I imagine the deeper the room the less you might need any treatment.

The 1.7s were as big a panel as I could use in my current room.
