Check to see whether the amps do so without the preamp (just turn off the preamp and check again)

Yes they do. However, I talked to an electrical engineer in our office and he said what I'm seeing is not DC offset. If it were DC offset the meter would go immediately to some value 10,30mV or 1...3...V. What I'm seeing is the meter start at 0mV and slowly creeps up. He explained what I'm seeing is no DC offset but the amp sensing the meter as a load and trying to match that load.( I just know I'm not explaining this just right). The bottom-line here is it appears I do not have an offset problem.
Tonight I will use a sound meter to see just how loud I'm getting before the units shutdown. This weekend I hope to attach a scope to measure the amp output voltage ( calculate watts) and also see when the Cary's start to clip.
This issue is starting to take up too much of my time. I want to set your mind at rest I have no problem with my equipment and get back to enjoying music.
So far it sounds like you are simply running out of amp headroom. The Cary can output enough voltage to send the amps well into their 20ms headroom, which most SS preamps can't do. You may want to get a subsonic filter to lower the strain on the amps.
Alternately, a pair of subwoofers to cut off the bottom octave from the 3.7 may improve your system in general, increase bass extension and power - not to speak of impact, and improve clarity from the 3.7 in the mids and treble.
Mye stands would also improve bass output and probably allow you to take your volume down a notch.
Look If the Pass amp is seeing A dead short..it the speakers...just turn down the preamp or get diff speakers!....Like i sead the speakers are just too good for the Amps....Haha....right...These new Magnepan are a like a dead short..I had the 1.7 here on a Krell KSA250 this amp never get hot driveing any of the other magnepans i have ture ribbons or not.....but with the 1.7 in short time it was so hot you could not touch it...i new it was the speaker....the Apogees were hard to drive but not like that...an the1.7 for $2k the sound sucket my gunned xover MG2c were better in every way...goodluck
If your preamp has an output coupling cap (ie. it's not advertised as "DC coupled") then you do not have a DC offset problem ... as that's what a coupling cap is there to do, stop any DC from passing through.

Andy
