Although audiophiles email me a plurality of the time about music, they do frequently ask about Hawaii. Both sides of my family are from Hawaii, and almost all of my relatives currently still reside in Hawaii.
If you keep going east on Kalanianaole Highway, past the Halona Beach Park (subject of post below) and Sandy Beach, you'll reach the eastern tip of Oahu. That was an ideal location, to place a lighthouse. Although the lighthouse is closed, from certain vantage points, you can see the islands of Lanai and Molokai. If there are no clouds, you can sometimes see Maui. If you go during the winter, sometimes you can spot a humpback whale (or its spout).
Then you'll arrive at Makapu'u beach. Growing up in the 1980s, my relatives and I often broke in new bodyboards and fins at Makapu'u. You can see that the lighter shade of blue water indicates that there aren't rocks or reefs. Thus, the waves come in, and you do not have to swim far out, in order to reach them. That said, if you are not a seasoned swimmer, the shore break is dangerous.
Thank goodness, there are restrooms and outdoor showers, to rinse off the sand.
You can take in views of Rabbit Island ("Manana" in Hawaiian), which is an off-limits tuff cone bird sanctuary. The nearby islet is called Kaohikaipu.
But back to Makapu'u. My friends and relatives who lived in nearby Hawaii Kai would go out before dawn, to catch the sunrise on the windward side, which includes "Makapu'u."

Follow Ups:
When I was in high school, I would sometimes take TheBus down there to bodysurf early in the morning if I didn't have an early class. We didn't have to be on campus (Kailua HS) all day, unlike most other high schools.
I lived in Oahu from 1st thru 3rd grade and visited a couple times since. I don't recall ever seeing the lighthouse. Thanks! Nice pics.

perhaps you could recommend some choice Hawaiian vinyl, not in the don ho style, as my collection is low on that kind of stuff, because I hate duds, and find that music very transformative.
