And, BTW, I was also in the lottery for Viet Nam. I remember one Army recruiter telling me (as "my" year came to an end and it didn't appear that my number would be selected, even though it was close) that, once the new year started, I WOULD be selected - so I'd better enlist right now! IOW, he thought nothing of lying to me, just so he could make his quota of enlistments.
Of course, strictly speaking, that's off the subject.
The reason I no longer vote for the major party candidates (for President at least) is because the lesser of two evils is still evil.
I mean, the choice we had in the last election wasn't a choice - it was an insult, maybe even a crime.

Wow that sucks, very low, liars like that piss me off, don't blow smoke in my ass.
I hope it wasn't too awful going (if you enlisted then).
Had a friend who went and when he came back, all the could think about was partying and doing as many girls as possible. He described the experience as hot, humid, 98% boredom and excellent weed and 2% absolute terror even straight.
I was still in High school both years I was in the lottery but they stopped short of my numbers. Good thing, i was terrified.

I can't say i don't feel that way.

I have leaned / voted all three ways but the last time, I felt insulted too, what was done to hide the obvious highlighted how vastly more important winning was, over reality.
I found the current guy to be an abrasive, loud and unlikable personally (unlike Obama who i could picture having a beer with) so far as being a friend. But being pissed off, it seemed like the Monty Python phrase fit "and now for something completely different".
Honestly a small but real part of the willingness to try it was thinking about my brothers doctor.
He was not a warm and fuzzy type at all, but after his pancreatic cancer surgery he was known for (something called Whipple procedure) my brother is still alive 16 odd years later.
Later after 5 years clear, the dr told him so few people survive P.C. that there isn't good data of survival rates.
I mean, I could watch the news just like anyone else. And they explained that when you go into the new year, they choose from the new year's lottery numbers - not the previous year's (like the bs this guy was trying to give me).
BTW, that's quite the story about your brother - I wish him the best!
My draft lottery number was 14.
A bunch of friends of mine with low numbers enlisted in the Air Force so they would be sent to Ramstein in Germany.
BTW, I don't remember what my younger brother's exact draft lottery number was, but, in his year, it was in the 300's. Brings to mind the phrase, "I'd rather be lucky than good!".
I too had several friends with low numbers who enlisted in various branches of the military. I didn't want to go to Nam, but if I got drafted I would go, but I wasn't going to enlist, but wouldn't dodge either. In October I was sent to get a physical in KC, recruiters from the branches were blowing up the phone, but I resisted. They ended the draft in December. I would have been drafted in January with such a low number. My older brother always said he would go to Canada instead of getting drafted. His lottery number ended up being 364.
