The threats to invade Taiwan have been a big motivator as well. South Korea, The Phillipines, Japan, and OZ have all increased military spending and preparedness. They would need to take North Korea out quickly as well if China starts are war in the region.

Why does NATO even exist? It was a response to the USSR, which Gorbachev disbanded in the '80s. So why wasn't NATO disbanded in the '80s? By clinging to cold war mentality, the west incentivized Russia to return to USSR tactics.
They had Stalin and before the centuries of the Tsarist empire.
Seems they were right to be concerned.

Pushing our outdated military alliance right up the banks of the Volga River was bound to provoke a response. Just imagine if the Soviet Union admitted Mexico to the Warsaw Pact? Really, we don't even need to imagine, just think about the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Why should US soldiers be on the hook for Latvia? Or Latvian soldiers for us? It's beyond ridiculous.
