Boy, am I already tired of WINTER.
This time of year, Humidity drops to near-zero even though I find the temps quite comfortable.
I'm trying to SELL my Eddie Bauer Ridgeline Parka.......but that's another story.
But this morning? I went out to the Kitchen t start my single cup of Coffee....for the Day.
THWACK....and a little blueish spark. My arm was momentarily paralyzed.
MAN, I HATE STATIC ELECTRICITY.
Short Of wearing a grounding strap and installing grounding stations everywhere, I'm CLUELESS.
Any cures? Any advice?
Too much is never enough

Yeah, small dogs CAN be a PIA. Some are just NASTY since they've been picked on since birth.
Here is SoCal? Chihuahua is a prime offender. I'll bet they bite MORE people than Pit Bulls....

I live in the land of very low humidity so every morning My routine is putting moisturizer on my body. If I skip a day then it's never good
How about ZAP frequency?
I've SEEN blue sparks from touching stuff....and people 5 feet away HEARD it.......
Man, I HATE THAT....
Too much is never enough
Enough rubber to insolate you from lightning.
I think I was wearing my Rubber Soled TEVAS at the time?
After a big zap, it takes me a minute to 'boot back up'......so to speak.....
Similar to what's at link......though I paid a LOT less......I bought 2 pair about 12 years ago and the #2
pair, now in service will go another couple years......

My own experience that Sketchers shoes are major static generators.
The blissful counterstroke-a considerable new message.
Sketchers had a LAWSUIT / settlement some time ago. A class action suit?
Something to do with what amounted to a copy of the Earth Shoe.
This was that funny 'negative heel' shoe.....kind of 'rocks' when you walk.
Be that as it may, I can't fit IN 'em.......
My best fit? New Balance SL-2 Last in wide.......This is the ONLY shoe I know I can order thru the mail and have it FIT.
BTW? I got zapped AGAIN today. I walked out to the kitchen (ceramic tile floor) and TOUCHED the fridge handle.......Man, that Pisses me OFF.....
Too much is never enough
But man they are a delight to walk in
and then it starts warming up. Not Fair!! All winter I have memories of Yuri dragging his ass through the Tundra in Dr. Zhivago
I sometimes get big unpredictable sparks except when I go to the car and remember to touch the lock with fingers first, then insert key. It's much better to 'expect' a spark and not get surprised by one.
I also get a bloody nose from blowin' no matter how I do it
At least around here the "itchy back" will start to kick in as we progress deeper into the cold dry winter!

Shins most, thighs, lower back sometimes...
Yes, skin gets dry too, but at least I have recourse to some Jergens or whatever the wife buys.....
I ALSO use a CASTILE (oil based....SHOULD be Olive Oil, but isn't) Liquid Soap in the shower.....

Here in the great white north, whole house forced air heating systems usually include a central humidifier. Other options and include stand-alone console type evaporative humidifiers and of course the tabletop ultrasonic mist type devices.
I would avoid the ultrasonic type. They pulverize the water into tiny droplets - along with whatever minerals, etc. are in the water. This fine dust/powder likes to land in switches and pots, making them crackle and have poor contacts. The remedy is to clean all affected switches and pots, which is a pain in the butt.

From ultrasonic humidifiers: use distilled, DI or RO water. Many homes have RO systems for drinking water and ice makers.
Yes. Unfortunately, I didn't know that 25+ years ago. :(
I'm just passing on what can happen if a person uses tap water.

Breathing in aerosalized minerals certainly isn't good either.
Even if it passed thru a water softener on its way to the tap.
I grew up FAR SOUTH of Chicago, but still 'Cook County'.
We were MILES outside of 'city water' range and our town had WELL WATER.
40 grans hard....and turned everything a Unique Rusty Orange color.
We'd go to the city (in range of city water) and fill 6 or more 5gallon bottles and use THAT for
drinking and coffee......
We had an installed water softener and I schlepped MORE salt than I care to remember.
And pipes in the house took a beating, too. Leaks? sure. My dad replaced a bunch of it with
COPPER and Dielectric Fittings which only did so much good......
Too much is never enough
I have such an RO system. Keeps the need for the DESCALE operation on my coffee maker down to a minimum.
but what I DO for humidity? After shower I stick a FAN in the door blowing in and the warmer, slightly more humid air blows into the house.
Shower dries fairly quickly and ZERO mold (a problem with shower curtains.....?) and the house gets a little moisture to the air....

...on your central forced-air heating system, a pot of heated water (doesn't need to be boiling, just simmering) on the stove, or pans of water near the primary heating vents can help add humidity to the air. The greater the amount of surface area, the better.
For the inevitable drying/itching/cracking skin--shower/bathe less-frequently. Our bodies produce the necessary oils to maintain our skin (the largest organ in the body, BTW), and frequent showering/bathing (with caustic soaps/detergents) just aggravates dry skin issues. All the topical "moisturizers" in the world won't do sh*t (other than make you feel "greasy") if you continuously scrub them off in a hot shower/bath.
As for products--the best I have ever encountered are O'Keeffe's. They work, and you don't smell like a French whore, or feel like a greased pig after applying them.

We were on VACATION one fall (fall color) in Vermont and New Hampshire.
One stop? We got the LAST ROOM for miles in any direction. The water was NATURALLY Soft Water.
I didn't know why my soap 'didn't rinse off'......
Man, what a wonderful water experience.... Seemed like 3 drops of my liquid soap foamed forever.
Too much is never enough
Yes, a pot of boiling water works, as does pans of water, by the vents.
I've done both in the past. That said, if it really bothers people, just get a decent "sonic" humidifier and use good water. problem solved.
Personally, I like winter and the dry air. Here in Maryland, summer humidity can be brutal with dew points at 70+. Today it's in the single digits, and I'm happy. I don't have a problem with static.

I only use store bought distilled water in it.
This way it only requires very little cleaning.
No use in wasting energy.
It really shouldn't be left unmonitored lest it run dry and risk potential damage to the pot and stove (or other heating appliance). There's also a fire risk depending on local situation.
AA is a high tech community and its residents should be able to effectively deal with a purpose designed humidifier and its idiosyncrasies like white dust or musty odors. These things have been around forever and most issues have been experienced and resolved. An added benefit is that many stand-alone humidifiers come with built-in humidistats so they operate only when needed: just keep water in the reservoir.
...but many are "tight-wads" that won't spend the money to address the issue--any issue. Instead of bitching about dry forced-air heat and the associated skin issues, how about dropping a few bucks and installing a whole-house humidifier on the furnace? Nah--just keep spending $20 per week on "moisturizing" skin cream and keep on bitchin'...
