It was the very first 10 speed.
You can get a compatible compact crankset for this BB which is 50-34.
And the derailleur can take 11-28.
My 1999 Litespeed had 9 speed Dura Ace. The shifters were very good.

I upgraded it to DuraAce 7800 plus some other upgrades as it was a 5.2 (Ultegra) bike originally. Now, I guess it's a 5.5. Nothing on this bike is original, even the wheels have been upgraded since this picture was taken. Special Discovery Team colors without the Discovery Team logos or model number anywhere on the paint.
Haven't ridden it for over 3 years but plan to but new tires and a new chain on it in the spring and make it my three-times-a-week bike.

The older DA stuff seems to work forever.
I upgraded from 9sp DA to 11sp SRAM and I sold the DA shifters for about $200. They were snapped up. I was amazed!

Works a treat!Note the Nitto stem and bar. This is how the old timers in San Francisco roll with their older quill-stemmed bikes.
Once you get into your 'later years', being 'aero' on a bike doesn't do much more than hurt your back. :-(
And the titanium railed WTB seat is comfy enough for the few miles I ride at a time.
This is the bike I rode all summer here in Northern New Mexico. Will try to get the Madone on the rode next spring. It's a bit more 'racy' in rider position, but not too bad.

I've been lucky so far, I turned 61 the other week, but even with sciatica bugging me, my roadbike set up hasn't needed to change yet - If anything, more drop is good for my back - or seems to be.
My cross bike has a lot less drop, but that's more for steep descent and dirt track manoueverability than anything alse.
Just keep stretching and keep riding - doesn't really matter what the set up looks like, so long as it works!
