The "Poor Mans" Western Electric 753 derivatives can be done in a variety of sizes with choices of 15" or 12" woofers and at what most would consider a very reasonable price.
Going smallish with a couple of sophisticated sub woofers (Rythmik Audio for ex.) would be fabulous for a small room and around 98db.
Take this for what it's worth as this is just my humble opinion. For smallish Altec (1" drivers), the 32 horn is the way to go. it couples seamlessly to a variety of direct radiator woofers. The other small format Altec horns have their problems and should be avoided for sweet sounding non-fatiguing domestic listening.
Follow Ups:
I wasn't even thinking of such. Thanks! As an aside, I've been spending some quality time with the Altec 32 horns lately (as recently as yesterday, in fact) :)
Joseph Esmilla has had a big impact on me with his continued forays with them.
all the best,

So, Joseph's is on one end of the spectrum at (approx) 4cuft and 12" woofers and mine are over 6cuft with 15" woofers. And obviously the xovers are a bit different.
You can see my speakers at post #86 at that thread link I posted.

Fair enough. But I went to the extreme and compared to a $35,000 Shindo Petite, mine is a bargain! And while not small, for 100db speaker its not that big either. Nothing like the big Tannoys or full horn systems etc..
You could go cheap and use any number of modern pro woofers... just make sure it goes high enough. A pair of Altec 802's and a 32 horn can be had for $600 or less. If one could make a cabinet like Joseph's (or have it made... any cabinet maker could do in an hour), then you have cheap and small.
The point is, you make this combination to fit your room, your budget, your music and your diy level.
