Terry, I likely would agree; those are fascinating alignments, however, this fellow has the SEX amp, and I can say that the SEX amp is a tad underpowered for the FE108 SADLY, because those two would be as far as I am concerned really tonally kosher. I think the 108 is the jewel in the Fostex crown, personally. VERY organic sound to it once broken in. I tried it high passed @ 140Hz on an open baffle and I can telll you it is a far more interesting sounding driver.
AND, a good set of 6DN7 tubes in the SEX amp with some upgrades STILL is almost completely overlooked because they are not fashionable enough. Good NOS RCA are incredibly stout and clean sounding tubes in this circuit. I owned the Korneff 45 alongside the SEX and the little Bottlehead stood on its own as a very, very good amp in its own right. It is a short cut to good SE sound on the cheap. It deserves appropriately sensitive drivers, shame the 108 is out of the offing. Its bigger brothers are clearly not, however, and the 168 is the best all round driver, technically, for a BIB, no sub needed there either, and offers an honest 94db. I have a pair in my living room for the last two years.

DrD,
You may be right about the SEX amp being somewhat underpowered, although if vocals and acoustic instrumental music is the usual fare (in a fairly small to normal sized room) I'm not sure that it would be severally compromised. However, my inclination would be to power the Aiko/108 Sigma combo with a 300B SET amp or perhaps a modified Scott 222 (I've heard a couple of them that were very good).
I have to admit that I don't have a SEX amp although I've got a complete set of matched NOS RCA blacktop 2A3, etc., that Doc Bottlehead presented to me as a prize for my Hydro Klammodyne (Red Tide Edition) speakers at VSAC some years back (3rd place Open Unlimited). One of these days, I suppose I'll have to get off my butt and do something with them :^)
Personally, I was so taken by the sound of the Aiko's that I would probably upgrade my amp just to be able to use them. Does it make sense to have a set of speakers just for certain types of music? Probably not, but I may just do that myself.
Best Regards,
TerryO
I thought the poster was in a larger room. If nearfield and acoustic mostly, then I would say the 108 would be okay just that it is a wee bit hungry a driver. Within its limits, the SEX amp is actually a very powerful little machine. The combination of the high gain voltage side, and parafeed makes for a really stout little machine. Personally, I am hooked on OB, using Alnico magnet smaller diameter drivers, but I reserve judgment on the AIko, believing it would be worth the hassle of actually buidling. As for several sets of speakers being sane, you should see my driver collection. This is not a hobby that concerns itself with "sanity," for its own sake. I say TRY the FE108, if it doesnt work, it can be sold fast. The Hemp TOne 8 is an obvious winning choice as I said, as is vintage 12 inch.

Well, as for sanity, you're right, as a lot of what we do makes very little, if any, sense to "normal" people. Depending on where you are, the Aiko/108's could probably be sold easily if the cabinets were presentable.
I also have a driver collection that is getting out of hand, a bunch of Radio Shack close-outs, along with many prototype drivers that have been given to me, as well as some rather exotic "B"-stock drivers from some high end speaker companies that couldn't, for cosmetic reasons (which I can't detect), be used for their product. Alas, my wife finally laid down the law, as she saw no earthly reason why our living room should have 11 pairs of speakers in it. When I compared it to her shoes and handbags...well anyway, unless it's really cold I don't notice it much anymore :^)

Well, 11 sets of speakers in the living room is likely pushing the limits of "sane," and "normal," under any definition. I must say that your wife likely would qualify for "insane," for actually putting up with it. Give her a kiss just for me. I am more inclined to place one set at a time, for aesthetic reasons. I guess I am in touch with my female side or something. But now I am tempted to try the FE108 myself, on OB. I would imagine high passed @> 100Hz it could really output some sound... ps, my current SOLE SET amp is in fact a SEX. For a look at it, go to SET Aylum, and search the word, "ruffles" and see Terry Cain's take on a Cain&Cain SEX amp. The amp was a gift to me from Terry, and I value it above all other audio toys. And, it is an outstanding amp, with PEC attenuator, Mundorf oilers, MQ, Japanese OTA cast copper cable soldered onto the irons, little changes like this yield a rather monstrous 2 watter.
