Hi Janis,

All the FiiO players I've owned had both balanced and unbalanced analog outputs. The unbalanced outputs used the standard 3.5-mm headphone plug. The balanced outputs had two ports, one for a 2.5-mm TRRS plug and the other for a 4.4-mm TRRS plug. In fact, I prefer listening to my FiiO earphones using a balanced cable.

You can also buy a balanced cable with either a 2.5-mm or 4.4-mm male TRRS plug on one end and two male XLR connectors on the other end. That's what I use to drive my power amplifier. I also bought 10-foot cables with XLR connectors on both ends and then I connected the other cable to them. Balanced cables have male XLR connectors on one end and female XLR connectors on the other. That way you can daisy-chain them. Here's what I bought:

2.5mm male TRRS to dual male XLR connectors.

4.4mm male TRRS to dual male XLR connectors.

10-ft Pair of balanced cables.

John - Unless you run the FiiO players like the M17 as a portable device I don't understand the attraction. You need a clutter of adapter cables, DC cable/power brick, and a cooling fan stand as the new M17 runs hot - according to FiiO's own website.
Do you run these FiiO players from a listening chair with DC power adapter/cable and lengthy interconnect to your audio rack? Or do you set it up on the audio rack?
At $2000 why not just buy a good music server / streamer for the audio rack?

  I don't have the M17 yet. It's just now coming out and so far, it's not available from Amazon. I currently own the M15 and the M11 Plus LTD.

  Perhaps you have to buy one in order to understand the attraction. For me, it's the most attractive solution for playing digital music that I've ever found. If it's not your cup-of-tea, so be it! However, it solves all the things that I consider to be problems with playing digital music. It's totally autonomous in the sense that no additional equipment is needed. It does everything. It stores my digital music files and it plays all digital formats up through DSD256 directly from its 1-TB digital memory card. It streams from all the audio streaming websites in addition to all the video streaming sites. It has balanced and unbalanced analog outputs and it sounds as good as the best DACs and players I've ever heard, yet it costs a lot less. My M11 Plus LTD was $750 and my M15 was $1300.

  Yes, I prefer to have the FiiO player at my listening chair. I usually play it from its own batteries and then recharge them when I'm finished listening. However, I also have a FiiO docking station that will keep the battery charged. If you prefer to place the FiiO on your audio rack with the rest of your equipment, it can be remote controlled from your smartphone or tablet by downloading the FiiO Music App, which provides a clone of the FiiO player with a wireless connection. The FiiO App can control all aspects of the FiiO player via WiFi or Bluetooth, whichever you prefer.
  I always hated using a computer streamer connected to a DAC with JRiver or other streaming software. Now I can load all my favorite music onto a 1-TB micro SD card that plugs into the FiiO. My Mytek Brooklyn Bridge also has the capability for loading music files onto a 1-TB USB flash drive, but for some odd reason they designed it so it won't play DSD from the USB flash drive. For the life of me I don't know why they did that. I had to install JRiver on my computer and attach it to the Brooklyn Bridge using a 12-ft USB cable. The FiiO eliminates that problem entirely.
  Anyway, the FiiO players are very attractive to me. If they're not attractive to you or others, so be it. I love my FiiO players. All my favorite music is at my fingertips and when I travel it goes with me. I can bring it to my audio buddies' homes and plug it into their systems. In my opinion, FiiO is the greatest thing that ever happened to digital. All the FiiO products are very reasonably priced, too. FiiO is definitely my cup-of-tea!
