I have a pair of sennheiser 650 phones that my Samsung tablet cannot adequately drive. So, I'm looking for a high efficiency, over ear and close back headphone, preferrably below $300. I have read that Beyerdynamic phones are quite efficient but I have no experience with this product. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Check out the HiFiMan line
My Grado SR60i phones are very sensitive. The specification is 98dB/1mW, and I think that's conservative. In my recent bench tests at 400Hz, anything above 20mV RMS was LOUD . That would be equivalent to roughly 0.01mW (32Ω impedance). These aren't the physical style you're asking about, but maybe this info will be helpful just the same.
I also would suggest going with Grado
If you like your Sennheisers you can get a headphone amp for less than $300. That option worked well for me.
Regards,
Steve
The DT 770s come in three varieties. The 80 Ohm may be your best bet.
