Some have speculated that the dearth of women audiophiles is an evolutionary adaptation , from back when leaving the group to go hunting involved risk, so men went , as a way to give the family unit the best chance at survival.
gradually evolution gave those with hearing that was better adapted to hunting , the evolutionary advantage. So males have evolved an unconscious mind to have more interest in sound.
Of course, this theory had to have been thought up by an audiophile, so who knows. maybe women just find it boring, as some musicians do.
All I know is that I find women with any interests that parallel mine, extremely interesting. and that goes for all the other ones too.
Follow Ups:
Yes, you do come across the occasional theory of how evolution has shaped the modern audiophile undoubtedly sourced from an audiophile. At least this one is better than the 'hear predators near a waterfall' one.
Anthropologists believe that early hunters used to run after prey across the savannah. Though not as fast they could outlast animals who were built for short evasive sprints and would eventually collapse from exhaustion. These days audiophiles complain about getting up twice as often to turn over 45rpm editions so not all evolutionary adaptations have been retained :)
Audiophiles have been in long evolutionary stasis:" ...a relative lack of evolutionary change over a long period during the history of the species"
Audio Luddites are slow to adapt and oppose technology while holding fast to old rituals and incorrectly claiming that new technology is sonically inferior.
OK

But he used the monkey to do it
Apes in the plan

But thought no one would make the connection.
I would have made the connection but I've been a bit of a nerd from the beginning ;-)

I've seen multiple sources saying that women generally have better hearing than men. They usually claim it is inherent for the need for a female to hear a child.
Others refute that saying that men are more likely to be exposed to loud sounds which can damage hearing ( machinery, gunfire, etc.), therefore less acuity in general. But through exposure, not genetics.
In my experience women (again in general) don't like listening as loudly as men do. But if they are interested in music and willing to listen then they seem to be quick to pick up small details.
"The secret of life is honesty and fair dealing, if you can fake that you've got it made." Groucho
my opinion on the poorer hearing in males was formed by some research I saw that tested remote tribal people who were never exposed to other than forest noise. That research showed that both old men and women tested about equal. This male knows that being around machines and amplified noises has hurt my hearing. I try to remember to take foam earplugs with me when I go out to events, even to the movies.
All I can contribute is that my wife's hearing is better than mine. She can hear the slightest raindrops on our roof and tell me it's raining. I have to look outside to know!

... partly because of the need to hear high-pitched sounds like babies crying and whimpering at a distance...... And also so they can more easily hone in on the latest whispers of gossip amongst the other women in the tribe ?
