Do you want to get them something that you would like or something they would like?
I suggest a pair of powered or active bookshelf speakers with HDMI ARC, streaming, and AirPlay.
KEF LSX II, and Klipsch The Seven or The Nines come to mind.

" Do you want to get them something that you would like or something they would like? "I was thinking the same thing. A simple 'all-in-one' powered speaker or pair of powered speakers would be a consideration. Do young folks still want separates, interconnects, and speaker wires cluttering up their small homes? Streaming content from their phones via Wifi or Bluetooth is a must.

KP does have a point with the failure of an all in one system though. I'd make sure it's got a REALLY good warranty. And, sound wise, I don't know. I got the Audioengine B2 I ordered yesterday, plugged it in and well, seriously disappointed in the sound. Nicely built, easy BT setup, but sounded like a heavy wool blanket was draped over it. It's already back in the box to return.
From a statistical standpoint, the more parts in a system the greater the probability of a failure in the system.
Me, I wouldn't judge a whole category of products based on a $200 product with a pair of 2.75" 'woofers'.
No, I wasn't judging an entire class of products based on my little table radio, active ATC's are on my audition list. And, if I get my music room back, I will be putting together a simple living room system. When that time comes I'm certainly going to look at KEF BT (others?) actives, I hate cables in the living room! Perhaps given the budget in this case an active is the way to go, but do you get a better sounding system at this price point? I have no idea.
And, I see KP's point in that if the powered speaker fails (either the amp or the speaker) aren't you down 2 components in the system, especially if it's not possible or cost effective to repair it? Now, the KEF's come with a pretty good warranty, so I would at least listen to them and their passive brothers with a nice amp to compare, well, maybe Pink Lady's to Honeycrisps.
I had a pair of Audioengine powered speakers that were not great. I've had better SQ results with a couple mass market brands when it comes to powered speakers. My Bose is very nice as is the Marshall Stanmore. In addition to BT the Marshall Stanmore III has stereo RCA and mini AUX jack inputs. (The original Stanmore that I have has Optical input as well).

and... adjust.
Both on your end and the equipment's.
Then, if still unhappy, return it.
Audioengine has a great return policy.

It's still here. Guess I've got nothing better to do after surgery on Tuesday. It just really sounded bad!
It is the easiest, most straightforward "unboxing" (no, I didn't video it) of a piece of equipment I've had.
Try a burn-in disc. The Cardas one or a similar app. A new Klipsch sound bar sounded thin at unboxing but after a couple of days, big difference!
I've looked into the various KFE wireless speakers.
Not lining the issues reported re: bad UI and spotty connectivty.
More important, don't like the idea of putting all the eggs (speaker, amp, DAC, streamer) in on basket. One fails, buh bye KEF.

Fair enough.FYI, WiiM is noted for having poor wifi in their units. With my WiiM Pro Plus, the WiiM Home app tells me the Pro Plus is experiencing weak Wifi connectivity when every other WiFi device in the room is fine.
This includes a myriad of home automation devices such as cameras, smart plugs, Amazon Echo and smart light bulbs.

Every kid and his phone has Bluetooth. It's the "easy button" option that works if Wifi does not. In fact, many modern powered speakers, amps, etc support Wifi along with Bluetooth.
