Sure, there were shops everywhere, but IMO the gear available today is not only as good if not better, but adjusted for inflation it's a lot less expensive, too.
I'm one of those guys with LP proclivities, and I can easily find albums that no local record store would ever have had in stock back in the day.
The blissful counterstroke-a considerable new message.

reelsmith's axiom: Its going to be used equipment when I sell it, so it may as well be used equipment when I buy it.
It's almost infinitely better especially at modest price points. A decent entry level digital system is far better than a fairly costly Japanese receiver based system (that in it's day more than likely was attached to a mediocre TT at best). Remember those plastic rack mount systems that appeared in almost every home in America? Talk about rancid - doubt we could buy something that bad today unless we made an effort to do it.
Yes the hifi heyday is today.

The cost of really good audio today is far cheaper than it was back then. Heck, my garage system's front end is a lot more transparent than when I first ran Advents in high school. And having instant access to my digital library and that of Qobuz is a beautiful thing.
I would still take my current system, however, over the very best I heard back in the day.
The boss where I worked part time in college had Dayton-Wright XG-8 MKIII electrostats driven by a Threshold 800A with Mark Levinson JC-2 preamp, Linn-Sondek LP12/SME3009 and Sonus Blue cartridge. BTW, your DB Systems preamp wasn't too far away from the JC-2. Here's HP's system circa '80 with the IRS driven by Conrad-Johnson Premier One with Dennesen JC80, C-J preamp or Audio Research SP-6B (not in pic), Goldmund T3 turntable with Koetsu cartridge and Fulton cables.
