"Having said that, most of the reviews seem focused on use for home theater and gaming, not so much for critical hifi listening."
True, but the SYN is Jason Stoddard's baby and vairous comments I have heard from him suggest that natural sounding exploitation of the spatial information in most 2ch is worthwhile.
"For me, sound "transparency" and "in the room" immediacy and presence are priorities. Characteristics that are not usually improved the more active processing is applied to the signal."
I do agree, though I feel that pinpoint imaging is artificial and the soundfield I hear using the Syn with three channels is closer to what I hear at a live performance. There is no hyper-location of specific players at clubs, concerts, and opera. Yes, I do expect that there is some loss with the added processing.
"Are there any threads about this device here at AA you can point me to?"
There have been a few mentions but nothing useful here on AA. The longest thread is on HeadFi:

Still not hugely informative. head-fi is where the most Schiit followers plus Jason Stoddard hang out. You can see used ones for sale here.
One other source that is more music oriented is on Audiophile Style. First, a review with following comments:

Second, an introductory thread:

The Syn is certainly a deep-niche product, but I'm enjoying it hugely.

Thank you Skip, very interesting!
I will try passive first since it will only cost me about $30 and see how it goes.
Given I am now listening to 75% Classical (non electronic instruments recorded in live venues) I think anything I can do to improve "ambience" should be a lot of fun.
One thing I didn't try back in the Dyna Quadaptor days was to implement the same logic passively after the preamp to feed three channels of power amplification. should work better. I'm a mostly DIY guy in the Pass sphere.

I was thinking about multiple amps, yep.
I have them available. 4 or 5 very good sounding chi-fi class D amps, a tube OTL, and a Musical Fidelity Class A.
Will only use Class D in the summer though. 100f+ here for a couple months at least, and 110f+ not that unusual...
