When my son was born, my then wife and I duly bought a copy of the "Penguin Book of Saints," and we decided that our little son's Name Saint would be Saint Peter Chanel.
However, we did not burden him with the middle name "Chanel," lest some profane people assume that the perfume had something to do with his conception. His middle name is "Aidan," from the saint other than Aidan of Lindisfarne.
Peter Chanel was the type for the "Christian Missionary Cooked in a Pot" trope, owing to his Martyrdom in Oceania in 1841. The Cannibal Chieftain who had ordered his murder eventually repented and converted, asking that he himself be buried under the pathway to the chapel dedicated to the Saint, so that peoples' walking on his grave would atone for his sin.
Anyway, my Godmother was a formidable woman, raised in Depression poverty (her father worked himself to death, trying to provide). Despite that, in high school she excelled in French, Latin, and Greek; went to Nursing School; and then later was Certified as a Bilingual Spanish/English Teacher.
I lived to make her laugh, because her life had held so many disappointments.
Anyway, when, at some family function, I told her that Peter had been named. I asked her if she wanted to hear the backstory. Yes, she said.
So I told her the story about St. Peter Chanel's Martyrdom.
But, at the end, I ad-libbed, and confabulated:
"At the end of his own life, the Cannibal Chieftain recalled, 'Peter was kind, gentle, generous, and encouraging; he practiced his beliefs; and he loved the common people. He also went very well with a young Pinot Noir.'"
I thought that my Godmother was going to wet her pants.
