If someone has to spend as much as you say to get sound they need in order to enjoy listening to vinyl records I agree with you. However I don't need to spend that much on a vinyl system to enjoy listening to vinyl.
I have no idea what "best sound" means nor do I have any interest in learning or being taught what it means.
For me it's about maximizing my listening experience. IME what I might qualify as "best sound" might not be the same thing as the sound I enjoy most - kind of depends on who I'm talking to. The systems I've heard capable of providing the most accurate or live sound are not the same systems I would chose for myself.

When I wrote "best sound", I meant it from an objective standpoint. Minimizing the foibles of the format.

Yet whatever objective standpoint that may be. No problem some of my finest listening experiences have come with gear/systems that have fairly obvious character flaws. And some of the worst time spent in front of an audio system was with gear I never could find obvious performance flaws other than I really didn't like listening to it.I've always been able to find something the could sound better based on some objective criteria but it rarely seemed that simply improving some objective criteria improved the listening experience for me. Ah but something that improved my listening experience is/was always something special regardless of other objective performance evaluations.

There is no such thing as "objectively best." Best is inherently subjective.
I disagree. One can simply claim that whatever system achieves the best performance measurements (say some standard set of measurements) is the best sound.
Or whatever system is deemed to reproduce some set of minimalist recordings most like having heard the music live in the venue as being the best sound.
I simply concede those points to those who believe them. But they mean nothing to me.
And for sure consider my listening experiences as being unique to me. As you say inherently subjective.
Hmmm your conclusion sounds as if you actually agree with me
You guys and I are talking about two different things.
You're talking about what you, or someone else, likes. That's not what I'm talking about.
I'm talking about following the waveform pressed into the vinyl, and the various audio contaminants which end up being included upon playback.
As I wrote earlier, I'm quite happy with my record playing setup, even though it didn't cost $100,000+. I'm frankly not interested in trying to remove the last hint of rumble or tracking error. Even if I was, the record surface noise will still be there.

On this particular fork in the thread I'm just talking about the fact that "best" is an inherently subjective quality. There is no such thing as "best" without some human being deciding it is an ideal.
