Your conclusion does not follow from your criticism. Specifically, and correct me if I am wrong, you appear to argue that (1) the type of music you listen to live generally is unamplified; (2) the music sounds fine to you, ergo (3) HP was wrong.
Just because you have a difficult time finding unamplified music or that amplified music sounds fine to you does not mean that using live, unamplified music as a critical reference is somehow wrong. When you listen to amplified music, what are you hearing? The actual music? The JBLs you reference above? The sound board? The dozens of feet of mic cable? Probably all of the above, all of which impact the sound.
The point of using unamplified music as a reference is not because you "like" it, but to remove variables that impact the sound, and use that to judge the accuracy of your system. As a comparison note, I find most jazz today to be bombastic noise and unpleasant to listen to, but listening to a local band playing unamplified music certainly is a valid basis to improve one's critical listening skills, to which I do avail myself.
Follow Ups:
The music we all listen to has some sort of amplification, microphones... All of it. Ever. I don't care for classical music. Some, I can listen to, but to get all excited about attending an event, hell no. Same for what you say about jazz. Realistically, you more than likely have never been exposed to, or have any appreciation for the Great American Songbook. I like Bing, Ella, Billie, Frank, Miles. All of them. The new stuff, not so much. Unlike the geeks here trying to look sophisticated with their thumbs down I do like Dianna Krall. Sorry, but classical will be dead in 10 years. Jazz, maybe 20. But I'll be gone by then, so what.
I brought up the club I did because it sounds excellent. The amplification, dare they, are the dreaded JBLs, are used for vocals and sound reinforcement. They do their job perfectly. I brought that name up specifically since audio snobs here stick their noses up at JBLs. And you all know who you are.
So what local band do you hear that is unamplified? There are none, so give it up.
Meant to say "Specifically, and correct me if I am wrong, you appear to argue that "(1) the type of music you listen to live generally is NOT unamplified"
Even your classical music now has amplifiers and speakers throughout the halls with fine digital processing to compensate for hall acoustic anomalies. Here in Dallas there is a huge box thing that can be raised and lowered to change the bass characteristics of the room. And yes, there are speakers throughout.
