I got caught up in the "music's lousy but hey! The sound is great!" thing, too.
Think "the first three Sheffield albums." Though there are one or two cuts on the third Sheffield that ain't bad.
The first Sheffield is a collectors item, usually sells for hunnert or more (I paid five bucks for my copy). Sound is great, music isn't just bad, it's embarrassingly bad.
The problem is not that there is evil in the world, the problem is that there is good. Because otherwise, who would care?

...And it very well may be an urban legend, was when he supposedly read his cue cards and said something like, "Dat was the fabulous Lennon sisters. And now a couple of wonnerful tunes from World War I" (Which he read as "eye").
I don't have any of the Sheffield LPs, but I sure would have bought one for $5. I did find a clean Casino Royale LP at a flea market for $1 I'd have to go through my LP collection to get an accurate idea of what I have as far as audiophile approved goes, but off the top of my head, the previously mentioned Cat Stevens albums, a Classical "Percussion Music" LP, and one I'm actually not sorry I bought, Dwight Yoakam's Buenas Noches From A Lonely Room.
By the time CDs rolled around you'd think I'd have learned my lesson, but no. I'm looking at the "World's First Direct-To-CD Recording...Dick Hyman Plays Fats Waller" even as I type. That CD hasn't seen the light of day in probably thirty years.
Yeah, I've got it too. At least I only paid five bucks, not the ridiculously inflated price from 10-15 years ago.
Buenas Noches is a great album. Dwight at his meanest.

I remember the first time I heard that LP, when a guy in my audio club played it for me. I was curious about it after reading about it in Absolute Sound for so many years. Once Dusty's sonic spectacular, The Look Of Love was done, the rest of whatever that stuff is, started. Are you kidding me, Harry?
As for Dwight, he's the source of me saying to friends, "I don't like Country, but..."
I don't think Dwight Yoakam has made a bad album. Most of the stuff I have from him is on CD because either they were never released on LP or they were but only in Europe and LP copies are ridiculously expensive. Like Three Pears . Last time I checked Discogs, you'd have to pony up well over $100 for an LP copy.
Me, I love country--Haggard, George Jones, Tammy Wynette, Loretta Lynn, Marty Stuart, Willie and Waylon, Gary Stewart, etc...

I thought I had two copies of his Three Pears LP, one of them autographed. Turns out I have two Dwight Sings Buck LPs, one of them autographed. I'm going to have to quit writing "if memory serves me" and start using "my memory swerves me" instead.
I didn't mean to imply that Yoakam is the only Country I enjoy. I also appreciate Johnny Cash, Willie, Patsy Cline, and Johnny Horton, among others. An ex girlfriend sour faced those as "Old Timey", while she liked the more modern Country Lite, watered down stuff.
If you ever get a chance to go see Junior Brown live, I highly recommend it, if you've never seen him. His albums don't come close to capturing his Git-Steel virtuosity. Hillbilly Hendrix, if you ask me.
Oh, and I have an FM station within reach, and they play a lot of Bluegrass, which I've grown to enjoy. I've read that you said you like that too, so we're on the same page there, as well.

Especially progressive bluegrass, like Dave Grisman, and the Seldom Scene.
I've seen Junior on TV many times, had a couple of his CDs. I think my favorite JB tune is "Still Life with Rose." The title is a great play on words.
I've got Dwight Sings Buck but not signed.

Bluegrass is an area of my collection which I've neglected, for the most part. Mostly because I put the brakes on buying in general, when I still have so much I haven't listened to, already in my collection.
Autographed Dwight Sings Buck was a score thanks to someone on the Vinyl Asylum, who posted about 100 of them being offered for sale, so I called immediately. What surprised me was that when the shipment arrived, there were two LPs in the box, one opened and signed, and a second, still sealed.
I first saw Junior on Letterman, who was known for having hip (I don't like that term, but there it is) musical acts, but Junior Brown looked like he was plucked off Hee-Haw. Once I got past that book cover judgement and heard how the man could play, I became a convert.
