I don't think I was ever Kef kef kef. Line Magnetic is one of the punch above its weight brands.
I was and still am big on Audio note and as I note becuae they make the entire system at all kinds of price points I wind up talking more about them. With most companies you don't have the sheer breadth of products. Kef has the LS 50 at $1500. The other models use a lesser sounding coax. Then there is the blade at $30 k. Kinda limits the recommendations. Line Magnetic...the star is the 219. Value per dollar. The 211 I also recommend and their digital is good value.
Indeed, I think I've softened the over-the-top praise of AN over the years. Nothing can top Stereophile's Wes Phillips review Ongaku Means Ecstacy. And the speakers were the AN E.
Indeed, one step to becoming a reviewer may be proving that you have good ears. If AN sounds good then to me that is a litmus test if the reviewer or audiophile is anyone I have the slightest interest in listening to. Doesn't have to be their favorite but it has to be right up in the conversation.
You chose people who hear it like you. What is puzzling to me is when I read people who agree on 9/10 things and don't get what I hold as even better. But I'm patient.
Follow Ups:
Well, I can say that we definitely lean in the same directions sonically but I will be damned if I can understand what you and some others hear in the AN speakers. To me they sound rolled off in the highs and sort of homogenize things. I have heard the upper middle level Es with everything from the lowly P1 through the Meishu Silver to the Jinro (is that right? Bottom of the line 211 based amp...still 20K though) and the same basic character remains...so much for compare and contrast. After coming from Acoustats and Apogee they sound carmel and veiled. I could see AN amps with big efficient Tannoys or my Odeons working well though.
The electronics seem fundamentally sound but i haven't got to hear them yet in my system. I will probably try an Oto se signature with the much beefier output iron.
How is that Line Magnetic LM219ia working out for you? I demoed one recently with a pair of Line Magnetic western electric horn speakers. Was pretty darn good but I am leaning more towards the LM210ia for my horns. 10 watts should be plenty.
What I am really eyeing now though is either AN Kits parallel 300b monos (the all C core version) or a pair of Transcendent sound SE OTLs (12 watts bridged mono).
Like I say I am patient. The AN E is simply far too good for someone with your ears not to "get it" so frankly I am just going to wait you out that one day you will hear it. Because frankly you hear most stuff the same way I hear most stuff. I can get you not loving it as much as I do but not to like it? To me indicates something is amiss with your friend's stereo.Nothing you have said about the sound particularly surprises me - but the Old school was posting for over a year on this forum saying the AN E was crap because at a couple of shows it may have been (and it could be in your friend's system as well). But then poof - heard it correctly done and best thing since sliced bread.
This is correctly done and plenty of treble sparkle even on the youtube at 7:30. It's not going to beat a $300,000 horn - but the speakers here are like $8k. So gotta put things into perspective. This is a domestic loudspeaker made for normal homes rooms of medium size. For the best - big ass Silbatone and other excellently done horns are going to give the cymbals a recreation that silk domes will struggle with - although the AN E/Spx Alnico is superb and is the version I want.
