but there isn't. There is something here worth watching.
I think LAMM is an unfortunate exemplar. I am sure the amplifiers are well tuned and time was taken to make the stuff sound good to those who like it but the quality of components used inside is pedestrian. One has to admire what the fellow does with mostly modest parts but he has to be making a fortune on the stuff. I do not begrudge anyone making money - I prefer buying components where the price is in line with the components used to make it.
There is too much cult of personality in the industry.
It should be no surprise there is a backlash to this.
I agree that I have little desire to read about toys. But if someone found a toy that sounded really good I know I would be intrigued. My experience has taught me that this really doesn't happen.
There are many boutique shops selling interesting gear that should get more attention. The semi-DIY market is offering some really good stuff that rarely gets mentioned here. First to come to mind is the DDDAC1794.
One should aspire to good sound but to spend mindlessly is not possible for most of us and usually nothing more than pretension for those who can.
Follow Ups:
If there is one surefire way to get megabucks performance for a reasonable price then DIY is it. Hart & Williams-Hart have gone but the work of John Linsley Hood lives on here.
There is going to be a DIY renaissance - and quite right too.
Thanks for the kind words.
We are in agreement.
DIY has many advantages - first off it makes us think. What I have learned through my projects has been useful in many ways, not just for audio.
I remember (when I was 15) BOZAK loudspeakers were available in a semi-DIY version. You could buy all of the stuff separately. You could start with the giant cabinets, if you wanted, and add drivers as you could afford them.
Very modern but where did that go?
Only when you make a product that is meant to last can you offer such a path to your customer.
"I think LAMM is an unfortunate exemplar. I am sure the amplifiers are well tuned and time was taken to make the stuff sound good to those who like it but the quality of components used inside is pedestrian. "If you check out their tube gears, they are one of the few companies that puts in a transformer large enough to not saturate on the mid-bass at full output power. That is hardly a "pedestrian" part selection, and would drive the cost of that part sky high. But they don't even take it all the way since it is a standard core, if you wanted to make it even more linear, you could go to "C" cores in those transformers - which would make more expensive, but might boost the sound a little bit more. So while they might be a great choice for a sensitive speaker with a couple of trouble spots in their load curve, they are leaving some performance on the table, still, in the name of cost.
Whether the money they charge is "fair" or not, I'll leave to others. I know I couldn't afford it, but I do know what makes them different from, say, Prima Luna, Rogue Audio, VTL and BAT for that matter. The driving costs in tube amplification is the output transformers and tubes selected.
But to your DIY idea - you could easily start conversation on it - and it would be far cheaper to put in a gigantic transformer in yourself

Hey! I have a blog now: http://mancave-stereo.blogspot.com or "like" us at https://www.facebook.com/mancave.stereo

come on, everyone laughs at the parts costs aspect of LAMM gear.
And I was only speaking of the tubed gear.
No point in posting DIY stuff when there is no interest. I have tried in the past.
DIYAudio is more of the place for that. Which is why I enjoy both sites.
My main point is that there is a difference in "high end" (and the term makes me cringe) sound and gear that is simply expensive, blah, blah, blah ...
