You are correct if this is what you are saying:

Speakers sent to small sends bass info which are on these channels over to the subwoofer via LFE.

Speakers sent to large retains the bass on those speakers but bass is still coming from the LFE.

I hve an option of setting both large + LFE on my fronts which retains bass to the mains but also sends that info to the sub via LFE as well.
