It's by all means, not done, but here's a first look to show you the direction we're headed. The item listing pages still need some work.
We've added a new image browser and would like some feedback on it as well as the general look. Here's a Sample Item Page.
Once we get the basic visual done, then we'll be going full speed ahead on the new functionality.

I really like the look of the new proposed AudioAsylum Trader pages. I really like the way you have the actual listings concise with just the right amount amount of summary info.
The category menus on either side are just right.
I really like the banner at the top of the page.
My only suggestion would be to have the word "Home" appear when the cursor hovers over the A2 logo.
Great job!
DaveT
Great job. I love it and am in the process of moving all my listings from the downward spiral.
Again, really fine work and look forward to seeing things prosper here. I'm in.

Tubes and vinyl are preferred.

Very good job on the overhaul.

That's a whole new app.
Right now, it's just a random ad with an image.
Making it only for Contributors would be easy, just a 'where' to the sql.
What I want to do is hit 3,000 listings before we worry about charging for listings. We do have limits for the number of ads versus more for Contributors. Our objective is to keep it simple and concentrate of aesthetics and useful features for users rather than revenue.
It's just last on the to-do list.
-Rod
I like it simple too but when the time is right, I'd be willing to pay a little extra for featured ads.
I noticed that some of the larger ad photos 800x600 or so +/-, are taking a while to load and display. I haven't tried at different times of the day but I'd guess that it depends on the number of concurrent users and other factors.
Do those pics place a disproportionate load on the server?
![]()
The server seems to be idling. I'm not seeing it, but I'm on a Gigibit connection to the server. The only thing I can imagine is a weird peak or a bottleneck with the router/pipe.
Although, I've seen huge difference in images possibly based on quality settings. I might play with reducing the quality a bit, some are nearly 500K which will take a little time.
Or I can move them off to our image server which is on another pipe.
-Rod
I noticed that some picture file sizes are larger than they need to be probably because users may not know how to strike a good balance between image quality and an appropriate amount of compression. Too much compression and the detail is lost. Not enough and the file size is much larger than it needs to be.
I think pics are an important part of a good ad but at some point you may need to limit the file size or have the server do some 'trimming' after the upload.
Overall, the new look of the Classified section is great! And it's easy to navigate.
![]()
Looks great. I hope you keep it free to list, and free to see. This will be the most effective way to run it, unless you want to change from your current status for whatever reason. I hope to make this improvement that it doesn't cost you so much that you have to alter your current policy.
Freedom is the right to discipline yourself.
Rod, consider these sub-sections under the Speakers/Headphones section:
Speakers - floor standing
Speakers - stand mounted
Speakers - panel
Speakers - hi eff
Speakers - subwoofers
Speakers - parts, drivers, stands, etc
Headphones
With the growth in listings we all hope you achieve, I believe this breakdown will allow easier access to what an individual may be looking for with a larger number of listings. Also, it is more consistent with your discussion thread headings.
Please note discussion on "Monitor" in the referenced link.

hi, it would be nice to have a category under speakers for hi effiency and/or horns...

I always thought perhaps a "vintage" category might be a good idea. Those looking for older gear could find it in one place.

I just posted my first ad with your site, very easy, outstanding! I will gladly support your site in the future.
Rod in an effort to do whatever I can to help AA's new Audio Asylum Trader be a success. I've posted in a forum I created & moderate called SETriodes ---{ I provided a link to this post below }--- a post which essentially said the SETriodes forum & I personally endorse A.A.'s new Audio Asylum Trader as being the place our 1275 SETriodes members, should go to first when placing a piece of their audio gear for sale. Especially before paying to post their audio gear anywhere else.I further said: Remember the ONLY thing that's keeping The Audio Asylum Trader from being the next Audiogon is:
• First getting the word out to all your friends about this new audio site.
• Second using it ourselves as the place we sell our gear at.
• Third telling our friends we suggest they try selling their audio gear at this site.
• Fourth our causing an increase of ADs selling gear, so there will be an increase in people looking to buy gear there.Basically it's in the hands of each and everyone of us to either make or break this site. So lets make it a great place to sell our gear at! Finally I told everyone there and here I absolutely no affiliation with Audio Asylum or The Audio Asylum Trader other the fact that I am a member of Audio Asylum and I do use their new The Audio Asylum Trader to sell my audio gear on. That is my only tie to Audio Asylum's forums or it's "classifieds" area.
I sincerely hope this helps in some small for The Audio Asylum Trader be a success I hope and know it can be! Good luck Rod.

I overheard just the other day, Roger Ebert gave the new site 2 thumbs up FWIW! Nice work.
Good Job. Of course, you are going to charge something for the upfront listings, no?
Will there be the ability to search by Zip code or partial Zip codes as before with A.Gon??
We looking at a few options, one being an advanced search with a number of other capabilities.
-Rod
For example, where would one place for sale an outboard digital room correction device used for two-channel systems (i.e., not home theater)? Currently, under Accessory/Other are everything from jumpers, to tip-toes. Pro-audio has the grouping "outboard processors," but who would look for an intended domestic product in Pro-audio? Equalizers and tone control devices, as well as various digital domain correction devices should probably have a separate heading, no?
Thanks for considering.
Ian
Extremely well done. Makes it useful.
It looks awesome Rod. I posted 1 new Ad and renewed an expired Ad to help the cause. Good luck...

Everything Agon did right and then some!
Love how pics are clearly displayed. And in the ad the thumbnails are nice and large. Agon REALLY screwed this up.
Clear well thought out. And its its own site! You didnt rip anyone off with its design. Nor did you need to...
A knock outta the park.
CANT WAIT!!! Ill help throw LOTS of stuff up soon. (and donate more as its sells :-)
So awesome man!
Dave
I especially like the item page. Clean and easy to read, with space for plenty of product information. Well done, Rod.
Looks nice. I'll be checking it out regular.
I emailed today with a lady I'm buying a product that she sells regular on the other site. She said she's missing a bunch of inquiries since the changes there. Sounded very frustrated.
See ya. Dave
I liked it when I first read it, and I like it even more now that I see it "done large"!I like the "clean" look of it, and I particularly like the fact that one can sort by price, brand, seller, and date.
One minor quibble, if I may. It's not easy getting back to AA "Home".....
So far, so good, Rod! Thank you.

Maybe the thumbnails should be pre-generated as separate tiny jpg files, so they then load up quickly. It looks like they're currently taken from larger photos and scaled down on the fly as the page downloads.

I would put the price on the preview. Just save the step. Looks great.
Also a "year of manufacture" would be nice.
Thanks!

I'm confused on the price. It's on the list pages and everywhere else. Where is it missing?
Year is a good idea.
Oh, and what pages/urls were real slow? We can perhaps optimize those as some things were hacked in a bit and still need some work.
-Rod
Price not showing on featured ads on home splash screen. not a big deal.
Pics are loading slowly. As noted by someone else it could be because the big pics are scaled down rather then using thumbs.
I am looking for an amp and have looked up maybe 40 year of mfr so far. ugh. That would help a lot.
thanks! looks good and it is a great opportunity.

I added the price on the featured ads, that's easy and we'll add a manufacture year to the db.
On the loading, is that on listing pages like this one below? I am using thumbnails, but they were created for the item listings and are 150 pixels. For that page, I just used the browser to scale them to 40 pixels. The thought being that we'd settle on a size and then look at the bandwidth issues.
Looking at image sizes, I agree, even thumbs at 150 pixels add up. At 15-20KB each, 100 of then could add up to 2MB or extra data. Since image sizes are logarithmic, resizing them to 40 pixels could reduce the data by nearly 16X, or down to 125kb which would be worth doing.
The main page and item listing pages aren't as bad, are they?
-Rod
I tried it at work and now at home and both are an the slow side for images.
Thanks!

Are we talking about that listing pages with 50 or 100 items?
-Rod
I am just loading the page in your link that looks like 105 random items.

Sweet! How much does feedback cost here? (Sorry guys, it's an old joke) I have been accused (indirectly) of "buying" feedback but anybody can contact anybody I've ever dealt with for verification.
It is just sad what has happened over there but when one door closes, another one opens, so I'm looking forward to many more years of buying & selling here.
Beautiful work, Rod!
Rod -- looks very nice; serious and professional (love the subliminal graphics ;--)Now about the 'sample item page': It seems to me that logically, a person looking at an ad for the first time wants to see:
1. the things under the "Item Details" bar (how many days/views, price. condition -- as you have them, CHECK
2. the column of pictures to the right, as you have them, CHECK
. . . . . OK, now some things need to be swapped around:
3. the bar that says "Payment and Shipping" should say "Description" or "Item Description", with all the detailed description copy underneath and the pictures to the right so they complement each other.
. . . . and then
4. at the bottom (left) the "Payment and Shipping" bar, and bottom right, a "Seller Info" bar; or maybe v-v would be better ('seller' to the left)Buyers won't care about shipping details, or seller cred., unless they're first interested in the item. So the main copy should go up top, next to the pictures.
Click the link I provided to see an ad page with really nice graphics, but the content is bassackward, (I'm afarid, just the way you were proposing :~)
Edits: 02/22/12
I've been streamlining and reworking the item page incorporating your suggestions and trying to make sure it works for all the ads. I think this might be a good solution.
A listing with a lot of pictures works nicely and one with pics in the listing like the one below also lays out with a problem or strange spacing.
What do you think?
-Rod
Thanks for the input.
Layout of the item page is a real challenge. Here's part of the problem. We trying to avoid forcing a specific wide browser width and maintain the ability to change the browser width and maintain a nice layout. This makes going to a 3 column format problematic.
Secondly, each section of information varies depending on exactly what options get filled in, so it's somewhat unpredictable as to how big each box with be.
Finally, you never know what the user will stick into an ad. I had a layout where the ad description was under the pictures and could wrap around. Then I hit one of Chris' ads and it didn't work at all because he has a wide graphic to totally messed up the layout of the page and squashed one column completely. I need to try some more stuff.
Anyway, here's an example of what I'm describing where the description need the full width of the page.
-Rod
This update represents a significant mprovement in the Trader and I congratulate you on your efforts. I think it looks great, has all the info I might want and addresses many if not all of the numerous suggestions by members here. Thank you!!!!
Nice work.
I think it's a vast improvement, comfy and with much more personality than the generic classifieds, yet clean and tidy.
Seems instinctive and easy to navigate (possibly do to the similarity in appearance to Agon) but that's a good thing.
No need to reinvent what works and what so many here would be familiar with, though Agon seems to think it IS necessary to do so.
Pictures are already loading much faster too.
Great work, the effort you've put into it is quite apparent and appreciated, and the fact you've listened to user's input and incorporated
it into the plan is surely a great way to make us all feel part of the place.
The AudioAsylum Trader now looks much more like a viable place to buy, sell and trade audio equipment - and looks ARE important for this to be successful.
I hope it helps draw more new users and participants to AA.
