Or to say it another way, MP3 is a lot more forgiving than CD...... One can make a brilliant recording on CD, which would be diminished by MP3. But then again, one can make an awful recording on CD, which in a lot of cases would be more tolerable on MP3. And since MP3 sales have been displacing CD sales, I think recording engineers in a lot of cases cut corners in the recording process, because such benefit is diminished and too often unappreciated by the market at large.
