"The sound from an Ipod with lossless recordings and some half-decent ear buds leaves most of the old stuff for dead & at a fraction of the price."
Once again, I cannot disagree more..........
The most satisfying sound I've heard out of portable player played analog cassettes, not WAV or MP3 files.

... I’d hate to think we were all the same.
I’ve never liked tapes :)
I’ve put most of my CDs onto hard drive and send the music wirelessly to my main rig and enjoy it thoroughly.
I get most enjoyment from watching/listening to music DVDs. I usually stand to watch or listen to music, I rarely sit down.
To be clear, I like all my music systems. I have no idea if anyone else does or does not like them nor do I care.
I like what an Ipod can do. Not as good as my main rig but nor does it attempt to be.
I have lots of old gear and none of it is in the ballpark with my modern stuff. Others may have the same or opposed opinion. Matters not to me :o)
