Sometimes when I hit the back
button on IE 6 a couple pages of
garbage characters appear. This
just started happening today.

Follow Ups:
I've had the problem, sporadically, for months on my work (LAN) machine, running Mozilla. It doesn't happen very much here at home, also running Mozilla on a cable connection. And it seems to happen on the General Asylum more than the others.
Yesterday was awful...everytime I hit the back button, the whole page would have to be re-cached, which took 20-30 seconds (and I have DSL).
When I read the Asylum with IE, I have it set to never check the Web site for pages that are newer than the cache. Before reading I delete all temporary Internet files and offline content. This means that when browsing the long Asylum pages of links, and opening and closing a message putting me back on that long page, does not cause the refresh. This is by far the fastest way - the page is in the cache. It's not for novices though - they will forget to delete all pages before browsing. I'm used to it.I could not figure out why this technique was playing up yesterday. Every return was causing a refresh, despite my settings. At least I know there is an explanation. Compression would not be worth it if it causes the browser to hit the server each time instead of using the cache.
Regards,
Geoff

> > Every return was causing a refreshIt was a setting that I'd added trying to fix a different caching problem with the IIS version of compression. Everything should be fine now unless you happen to be on a particular ISP with this compression/caching bug.
down the page, but the top is gibberish. Hitting refresh a few times usually brings back the top of the page, but not always. Recently had our computer upgraded/rebuilt, but this still happens off/on.

I don't know, but I can guess.I installed some output compression software yesterday afternoon to try to reduce our bandwidth and increase performance at peak load times during the day. Thus far, the product seems to be working quite well with an overall reduction of 40% in data transfer. If you see funny characters, then you're probably gettting raw gzip output which would mean that your browser lost the header or has a bug or the compression product is buggy.
What browser and version are you running? If it's old, try upgrading it.
Also, I was banging on the server earlier, so I might have caused something by overloading it. Is this still happening? How many people are seeing it? What type of connection are they on? What ISP?
If this is a consistent problem, then I'll need to understand what causes it and find a solution for it.

Rod,Since I'm the one who suggested HTTP compression I thought I'd chime in. The problems described below are related to a bug in IE (basically any version for the PC since 5 as far as I know) dealing with gzip content via certain proxy/caching servers, and especially Network Appliance's NetCache product, which is used by some large ISPs. You can change your caching expiration policies to something like "-1" to tell the browser not to cache the page and instead load it again when the back button is hit, and that will fix the problem. Of course that will use more bandwidth since those pages would need to be outputted again, but it solves the problem of garbled output (though you could do browser detection and limit it to IE for Windows since this problem doesn't affect other browsers).

That makes sense, but I was having the same problem when clicking on a new page, ie. going from Tube Asylum and clicking on Tube DIY or General Asylum, NOT juut refreshing a page I already had in catch.

I can get a page to load if I go pack to "Preferences" and "delete all offline content" and then reload page.
Go to this page and just enter your Moniker. This will log some environment variables. I'm hoping that everyone that has problems might have something in common with the HTTP_VIA. If so, I might be able to work around the problem.

I'm still having the problem, after notifying you last night. I use IE6, latest updates. I just ran repair, and am still having problem. ISP is AT&T dial-up. I have the problem no matter what time of day--right now or 3AM, it's the same. Symptoms are same as described below, with example shown by one of the posters. Driving me INSANE!

Just for grins, look at this MS Article. If you do a search on your drive where Windows is installed, what's the date on the file, URLMON.DLL?I'd still be curious if you have the problem after installing IE 6 SP1 which you can do by clicking here .
With AT&T being common here, it could be that they are compressing files that are already compressed or doing something strange on their end. But, we still need to rule out any browser issues.

I looked at the linked page, and I have NO IDEA what they're talking about. I never do! To tell you the truth, I don't know what you're talking about, either:
"If you do a search on your drive where Windows is installed, what's the date on the file, URLMON.DLL?"Don't make me do that--OK, I just searched for a file URLMON.DLL, and the only date I could find related to the single thing that came up was 1-24-04. (?)
By the way, I know nuthin' 'bout no computers. so don't push MY luck!

Hi Rod,Much better at the moment (1:30 pm Central time).
I've got a good PC with latest builds of XP and IE6, 2 Mbps cable modem and it's really snappy today.
Whatever you're doing with your compression s/w settings is improving things.

Yesterday afternoon, EST, I was having trouble reacquiring the server after reading a post and hitting the back button. There was a good 30-45 sec. delay in getting back to each Asylum, which was different than when the servers just slow down due to stress. I could open a post quite quickly and move from forum to forum fast, as well.It is much better today.
...thanks for the new upgrades.

This just started today and I only
see the problem here at AA. It
happens in all forums 1 or 2 times
in 10 when using the back button.
I am using a AT&T Dial-up connection.

It's really fairly easy. Click on scan for updates and then install them all. You do install the security fixes, right?
