A friend of mine inherited a McIntosh CD player years ago manufactured in 1992. State of the art at the time, it's having issues and about on its last legs. He's on a budget and needs to stay around $500 or thereabouts. Based on my experience with CD players, both myself and another audiophile suggested going new, refurbished w/warranty, or dealer open box or demo. We attended the Florida Audio Expo and two primary recommendations came up; Marantz CD-6007 or Rotel CD-11. Any thoughts on either or other possible options from sound quality, build quality, or both?
Follow Ups:
Other options include Onkyo, Yamaha and the sometimes discussed get a $50 DVD or Blu-ray player and use it as a transport with a separate DAC.
Depending on who you want to believe, very good DACS are available for $100. You do need to make sure that the player has a digital output that the DAC can accept. Many DVD and Blu-ray players are HDMI output only these days.
Three downsides of the DVD player approach are there is no built in display, the players are generally mechanically noisy, and they tend to be slower in loading and recognizing a disc than a CD player.
Another option that has not hit the market yet, Fosi is working on a CD player.
Cambridge, NAD, Denon. Marantz players have an overly soft cushy sound, imo. The inexpensive Denon on this page is similar but to a far lesser extent. I got the Denon for my sister, and it's outstandinghttps://www.crutchfield.com/p_033DCD900N/Denon-DCD-900NE.html?tp=197customer-reviews-tab

Fearing that I would lose the ability to play CDs, I purchased a Tascam CD player. It's a robust unit, built for studio and road use. It works very well. As it happens, I use an external DAC (it was both optical and coax outputs). With a reasonably priced DAC (e.g., SMSL), the Tascam should fit within your price range.
Is Rotel still having software problems with their CD players?
I had a Marantz CD-63 player years ago which died an early death. I currently have a Rotel RCD-1572 that sounds great and is very reliable.
I have a Marantz CD-67 SE, purchased new; it runs fine except that the remote control receiver in the player doesn't work. It's sitting on a shelf with a couple of Carver components that I no longer use.
In about 2011, I replaced the CD-67SE with a CD-5004, which had smoother sound and a very decent built-in headphone amp. It's still in use in a secondary system.
A friend bought an SA-10 new; he's been happy with it.
and the 2 Rotel's I have are still alive and very well, like when I bought them. They also sound good. Both companies have a good reputation.
You may also think your Lazer Lens is clean but I'll bet you a cool fiver it's NOT. Have someone clean the lens carefully and check the sled mechanism for solidified grease on the rails etc. I've rescued a few players this way.
Maybe someone else will weigh in and break the tie
