Its the consistency from recording to recording that is the give away that something systematic is going on.
Follow Ups:
I have a D90LE (same DAC, no MQA) and it's not overly bright in my system. If anything, it has a much smoother and more neutral top end than its D90 predecessor, which I did find to be a tad bright. Everyone's system and ears are different, however.
Some of the reviews. I haven't heard the D90 but my friend had a lower model (E50?) that was a bit bright, kind of thin and had a relatively flat soundstage.
