They are reviewing CD transports and claiming some have "Musicality and muscle"
Umm, it doesn't do any digital to analog conversion. How can it have "musicality??
Cambridge Audio CXC
If you already own a DAC, you can buy this entry-level CD transport instead of a standalone player. Trust us, its sound will impress.

Follow Ups:
There are very audible differences between various CD transports. It's not something new. Have you ever compared two CD transports?
"Umm, it doesn't do any digital to analog conversion. How can it have 'musicality??'"The digital signals from different CD transports can vary.... The pulse train from the output must be precise with minimal jitter, stray noise, and RF noise....
To give you an idea, I use the Philips CDC935 CD changer as a transport (using optical converter).... I tried a CDC936 changer, which physically is almost identical to the 935 (with different internal electronics and button functions), but didn't sound nearly as good as a CD transport..... The sound became "dull"...... (I've heard a similar differences between a streamer without a reclocker and a steamer with a reclocker.)
CD transports can be a crapshoot..... If you find something that you like, I'd suggest you stick with it.

I have no comment on transports butWhat HIFI is highly biased in favor of British made gear and highly biased against many Asian brands. All one has to do is look at their reviews over a period of years.

... then we too are probably beyond the reach of hope.

and I have no Brit in me and cannot stand their colloquial 'English.'
I also own Castle loudspeakers when they were made in Britain.
The rest of my gear is Canadian, American wire and a Japanese CD player.
They have smaller room sizes so, apparently, that's what we have in common.
... and that could have something to do with the "voicing" of some Brit gear. Or, some Brits might simply be a bit wonky.
But Brits are better!
but my other half is Asian ;-)
And your experience actually trying different transports is...-????
You had absolutely NO idea what was you talking about...
My current Cyrus CDt-XR was obviously better than several other transports
I had in my home. Two days ago I added Cyrus PSU-XR to power the transport - and another mind blowing improvement... Listen with your ears please.

I was using a Bryston BCD1 as a transport only. It died. I bought a Cambridge CXCV2 and it was a distinct upgrade. Then in bought a PS Audio transport (it does CDs and SACDs). It is a real serious upgrade over the CXCV2. There is a difference in transports, believe me.

a transport is made of... (my guess)...a hundred different pieces or parts.
If they all used the same parts then they would ALL sound similar

what aspect(s) of the BCD-1 did you not enjoy?
The BCD1 was fine for me for a long time, about 10 years. Then I got a PS Audio GCD, and the dac therein was better than the one in the BCD1 in every way. So I just used the BCD1 as a transport, until that died . Digital gets better all the time, including DACs and transports and combinations thereof. The older stuff just doesn't cut it these days.

Thank You- for the follow up.
sorry, I guess I don't believe there would be audible differences in any competent transport.
But I would fight to the death to defend your right to believe differently, if that is any consolation :)
...? That's some serious audiophile s&*t right there...
Don't worry about avoiding temptation. As you grow older, it will avoid you.

there are most certainly audible differences between music server endpoints. Even with the power supplies used with any given unit both in transparency and dynamics.
Simple "bits are bits" theory fails in practice.
does not mean that differences do not exist.
First they came for the dumb-asses
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a dumb-ass
doesn't mean the do either...
or if they do, that they are audible to _anyone_, not just me...

That people will admit others can have a better sense of smell, or taste, or sight, or touch, but when it comes to an ability to hear things others don't...nope, not possible, snake oil, deluding yourself, confirmation bias, etc., etc., etc. Blechhh.

lobster!
First they came for the dumb-asses
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a dumb-ass
Like live lobster squealing when dunked in boiling water ?

That would be a scary sight in a dimly lit seafood restaurant especially after a couple drinks!
I guess those were available as toys but this is the first time I've seen one.
It is pretty reasonable to expect people have different abilities. Some natural and some learned/trained and when you get the two together that should produce an expert. But, the only way to really know is to test the abilities of the person. Take Usain Bolt, obviously he has natural abilities and he trained intensely. But, he didn't just write about how fast he could run - he proved it, regularly.
Reminds me of a tale.
I have no informed opinion on the transport issue. Just having fun.
