I'm looking to replace the Philips DVD player in my office system (all the things one dislikes, flimsy tray, slow as hell to read and react). Arguably it sounds fine whether from its analog out or through a Topping D30, I just hate it as a cd player. It has become painfully obvious that there aren't a lot of affordable choices out there for new production cd players. It's either expensive multi-function streamers and such or mass production below $500 that are not built like what $500 was 20 years ago...
I figured to move my Heart CD6000 (Marantz) from the main system and bring a little tube warmth to the SS office system (B&K PT-3 sII/Adcom GFA-535 II, Wharfedale Denton 80th) and get something new for the living room. As the amplification is tubed (Anthem Pre2L/Cary SLM-100)I figured I could live with a standard CDP. I was perfectly content with my old Pioneer PD-54 until it died and only got the Heart 6000 because an opportunity presented itself. Still miss that Stable Platter mechanism.
I'm thinking the CD5005 would be fine and I don't need the USB support or headphone amp in the 6006. Everything I can find would indicate they are otherwise the same unit. The other question would be the HD-CD1. It is still available at the same $400 as the 5005 and random comments I have found would lead me to think it is essentially a 6006 in a compact chassis.
Any thoughts on these three, or suggestions on other sub-$500 CDP to consider? Seems like Yamaha, Denon, Teac/Tascam, and Cambridge are the only other players in that space.
Follow Ups:
Bit the bullet and bought what I really wanted. A mid 1990's Pioneer PD-65. The laser had already been replaced so hopefully this brick outhouse will serve me well for years to come. Almost pulled the trigger on a CDM4/19 based Magnavox but I have always loved the Stable Platter on these models. Had a PD-54 a number of years ago but after it died gave it away to someone to possibly use the transport as a spares for his Cary.

As I became concerned about machines to play our CD collection, I purchased the non-Bluetooth version of this Tascam machine. Analog and digital outputs. Built like a tank (for professional use). It should last a long time. I play it through a Denon front end, McIntosh tube amplifier and Wharfedale Linton speakers.

The 5005 does have a headphone amp (but no USB). I have a 5004, and the headphone amp is actually pretty decent (but the volume isn't controllable by the remote). I'm certain the one in the 5005 is as least as good as the one inb my player, which powers Sennheiser HD600's with no difficulty.
This popped up on my radar. Intriguing despite the silly name. Built heavy and a functional DAC that could be a gateway to adding a raspberry Pi streamer...
I bought a Marantz CDP 6005 several years ago and since then I've found its performance excellent...out of the box it sounded better than any reasonably piced unit I had ever heard and with the proper amount of break in time you will find the sound will improve even more....I would recommend you find a dealer that carries the brand and allows in home auditions...I think you will be glad you did...btw, my unit is run through a Line Magnetic SET integrated into Joseph Audio speakers and the sound in more than enjoyable...
Good luck with your search...

I would look for a used Marantz SA8004 or SA8005. In my opinion one of the best reasonably priced Marantz spinners/DAC ever made. I sent back the more recent Ruby as it did not have the goods on the older Marantz pieces, IMHO.

Haven't seen them pop up a lot but I am following a couple of SA8001 auctions.
Nice Marantz in the trader
