Hello all. I'm looking for a dedicated CD player within a budget.
Just to listen to redbook discs through a non-computer, normal two channel system. (Parasound P3 preamp, NAD 262 power amp, PSB Stratus Goldi speakers in normal sized listening room.
I'm approaching 64 yrs old and seek just an honest, non-fatiguing soundstage without breaking the bank. Not chasing hi-rez anymore.
I'm looking at both the Parasound ZCD and Onkyo C-7030 - both new at attractive reduced cost. I know the Parasound has more features (the one most interesting to me is potential to use it as a preamp). But the Onkyo seems more substantial (in weight) and offers most of what I need.
Anyone input from anyone familiar with these two would be very sincerely appreciated. Thanks much.
Follow Ups:
I got an Onkyo and I don't like it. Compared with my previous Denon, it is flat and mechanical sounding, and sometimes adds zips and zchweets to the music.
I would be very interested in a player in this range that has a more organic, juicier sound.

Noise problems with the Onkyo, darn. Found anything thats totaly quiet that you like in the budget catagory??
I don't know if your aware of this or not, but the Zcd player is on sale at Audio Advisor for $199 at this time.
I am considering getting one myself.
........I was a vegetarian for 15 minutes... until the main course.
Yeah, that's why I was considering it. But I don't need the USB feature. Although I did consider it due to its variable output for use as passive preamp if my preamp developed problems.
I've opted for the Marantz CD5004 because the Onkyo has a captive main's lead.

I can't vouch for its longevity or reliability since I haven't had it long enough but sound wise, it's pretty easy going and laid back whilst maintaining above average midrange details and micro dynamics. So this might be something you might enjoy. I have been using it in my office along with Naim Nait 3R integrated amp. There is a slight treble lift when the volume is pushed but after putting my favourite power cord, it cleaned up nicely along with better frequency reach. And its *audio mode* ( basically disabling digital out, headphone outs, pitch control etc..) further improved the sound. I wasn't expecting much out of this unit and was planing to use it with an external DAC but for now, it's quite enjoyable as it is.
I think this one beat my past *giant* killer CD/DVD players easily in terms of listenability.
Nice! Kuma.
In your profile you list a Naim & Krell cd players. Interesting choices...
I used the 7030 as a transport for a couple years and it tracked every single disk I put into it. Heavy, looks great (and inexpensive).
Thanks All.
I ordered the Onkyo for $146 incl shipping. It would have been (perfect) if it did not have a captive power cord.
Oddly enough - although I've bought some Marantz products over the years - I've also encountered some reliability issues. Who'da thunk it?
The current cd player is too noisy. Had to throw out a very underused Marantz DVD player, about a $300 unit. Always had tracking problems. Marantz seems to voice their players somewhat musically but... Tweaker
