I feel your pain, but I don't think there is such a thing, audiophile SQ and portable, that is. The closest you could come would be a cd Walkman and a HeadRoom portable headphone amp. www.headphone.com/

...whether any new/boutique hardware might be out there in the way of portables. The idea that the only way forward is to rip to an alternate format and player is useless.
