Hi Paul,
As I noted, I wasn't at the show and had to rely on the reports of others. Sorry for the mistakes and thanks for clarifying the actual sources.
I always wanted to rebuild an Ampex ATR-100 with new electronics, as the transport was probably the single most insane, over-the-top tape deck ever conceived. (I never could justify the time investment, so it never happened.) Kudos to you for The Tape Project, and keep up the good work.
Best,
Charlie Hansen

Charlie,
Forgot to mention: no preamp. Either the tape deck or the DAC was used to feed straight to the power amps. Volume control for the digital sources was done with the BADA DAC; our tape machine was fitted with a Penny & Giles fader on the output. There was a custom switchbox to select between the sources.
I wish you had tackled playback electronics---or that you could find the time in the future. The ATR-100 is a fabulous transport, but the repro electronics are its weak point, in my opinion.

All we have to do is to change a few time constants in our RIAA MC phono stage and it's a no-brainer. (We've even made a flat version for a custom mic preamp once.)
The record side is a bit trickier. You need constant current drive for the record head. Plus I have a sneaking suspicion that the bias oscillator will have a bigger effect than one might think at first glance. But if you're seriously interested, I'd at least *think* about it. Drop me an e-mail.
Thanks Valin?
