Can I humbly say it's probably in the production.
My DGG Peer Gynt excerpts with BPO is a good record. But, often the 70-80s DGG Karajan records have wide dynamic range (unrealistic) and multi miking. Thus, you can have very low levels, marred by surface noise.
I don't know your particular pressing, but many here have expressed disappointment with reissues and newer audiophile type pressings.

That is right, and yet I stated an example of what happens w HvK pressings. I don't have and haven't heard that London/Decca set.
. . . sound (to me at least) way different from his DG recordings.
Agree wholeheartedly. What is your opinion of the re issues w 180 gym remastered ones?
I think OP has one of the bad remastered LP's. I know you fellas don't like LPs, but oh the covers and the joys of their sound (sealed copies waiting for me).

My experience tells me that all Dutch-made records (classical or not) generally sound good.
Sorry, docw - I couldn't resist! ;-)
Regarding your question about 180 gram reissues, I think I had abandoned vinyl before 180 gram reissues came out (at least the vast majority of them, at least to my knowledge).
Regarding album/booklet covers, I prefer to download the hi-rez graphics files (if possible) and blow them up to the dimensions supported by my 65" TV. I realize that I do give up some of the other sensory attractions of vinyl (such as the smell of the album cover - believe me, I'm serious!), but that's a trade-off I'm willing to make. ;-)
